Conference Wrap: Barnet leapfrog Halifax As Bristol Rovers & Hard Up Harriers Profit.

Barnet FC overtook FC Halifax with Gateshead FC, Woking FC and Kidderminster Harriers all climbing a place as Forest Green Rovers, Eastleigh Lincoln and Wrexham FC all lost ground on the play-off chasing pack.

Barnet’s unstoppable away form continued at Southport one of the most inhospitable places in the Division both on and off the pitch.  Lee Cook scored a goal that would grace any Premiership stadium, leaving two in his wake before unleashing an unstoppable world class dipping drive. Not to be upstaged Akinde doubled the lead before the break curling a cute one into the top corner to have the Bees buzzing in the aisles.  Barnet go top on goal difference, boast more clean sheets than a kleto matron and fear no one away from home.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

FC Halifax dropped to second as the wheels flew off the promotion cart.  Bristol Rovers, roared on by 5,394 fans who continued to keep the faith through relegation and a faultering start to non-league life.  Cunnington the scurge of the Conference Premier these last two seasons headed home an inviting cross from White. On the hour Boden roasted three Rovers players before thundering a hay-maker between Mildenhall and the near post.  Boss Clarke lit the spark by sending on Sinclair and Harrison to ensure a profitable rebate for the Division’s highest gate. Rovers upped the gas but still had to wait until a minute before time when Sinclair duly despatched a difficult but decisive delivery that Harrison forced home at the far post to lift the roof. Five thousand faithful will be cooking on gas in Bristol tonight then!

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Craig Hobson exploited some shocking defending to give Chester an early lead at the Heed then hit the post to allow the hosts to keep a foothold in the game.  Shaw got a penalty in the 67th minute and then Gateshead piled on the style with Shaw close to grabbing two more.  Guy played in Chandler who cracked a crisp right footer into the top left corner.  Gateshead move up one to third.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Woking won at Wrexham to move fourth.  The Welsh wizards, aka the passing princes of the People’s Premiership, had the best of things until  Rendell got a 25-yard worldie into the top corner,  against the run of play.    A typical flowing move evened things before the interval when Durrel gave Moult  the opportunity to cannon one inside the far corner from twenty yards.  It could have been 3-3 before Morgan twisted and turned before drilling inside the near post with twenty-five minutes still on the clock.  Clarke should have made it three when he almost broke the cross-bar in half after connecting with a Morgan cross.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Kidderminster could well be losing the talented squad that has seen the Harriers jump to fifth.  Host’s Dover paid the price of missed opportunities when Byrne converted Storers centre with a glorious volley from ten yards.  The visitors then got into gear but were denied by two stunning Walkers saves. First he parried Johnson’s drive and then palmed Nicholsons twenty-yard free-kick for a corner.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Forest Green and Lincoln fell from the play-offs after disappointing results.  FGR had to come from behind at winless Welling when Norwood headed home just before the break to equalise Fagan’s scrambled lead.  They say money doesn’t grow on trees but he definately picked a pocket or two at the far post after Hudson cross created havoc in the Green machine’s defence.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Lincoln – down to ten men as ever – had to play 80 minutes with ten and then another ten with 9 players until Robinson was glued together and sent back on.  The Gulls conceded the lead despite the advantage when Tomlinson was bundled over before recovering to thump home the spot- kick.  Acheampong equalised from close range before cometh tte hour, cometh the man, Richards, hit a glorious twenty-five yarder to give Townsend no chance. Acheampong was then teed up by Young to convert his brace with 18 minutes to go.  It was not surprising that the Gulls had more shots than a flock of pigeons bombing tourists at Trafalgar Square – 30 apparentl. The real stains on the copy book have to go the officials again they ruined a great game for both sides.

To the game fellow football fans to the game…………

The Imps kick off towards the South Park Stand.  Nolan plays to Diagne but Tomlinson is beaten to the challenge. Tomlinson forces a corner as the Imps keep up the pressure.  Newton’s corner finds Power who heads back to him but despite the pressure the Gulls break.  The Counter finds Acheampong, who touches to Wakefield, but, his poor long range effort is easily saved by Townsend

A great ball from Caprice finds Mendy, he plays in Tomlinson, who is crowded out.  The gung-ho Imps are leaving themselves open to the counter as Briscoe shoots high and wide after some great link play with Acheampong. That said it is making for a terrific end to end game. Diagne uses Acheampong’s shirt cleverly to deny a promising route one hoof from keeper Rice.

Time for the referee to influence the game again. Brown gives away a soft hand-ball –  Acheampong’s clever flick was certainly ball to hand – which is initially only given by the linesman. The Gulls professionally crowd the referee insisting he is the last man. Incredibly he gets the red card out and the Imps find themselves down to ten for the third game of the trot with just nine minutes gone.

Mendy drops back  as Lincoln go 4-3-2 with Tomo’s engine  expected to get up and down the expansive park. The Gulls press City but Mendy and Diagne are superb and the ten Imps go for broke. Power – what a change this season – has a shot charged down as does Nolan. Justice thirteen minutes in as Tomlinson is brought down by Downes beaten all ends up.  The ref perhaps gives in to player pressure on the penalty but ignores everyone in the stadium screaming for a red the other way. Tomlinson thumps home with aplomb for the right kind of three in three.

Tomo is a man on a mission covering every blade of grass to bring down Young. The midfielder hits a set-peice screamer just over the bar. The ball falls to Diagne in the area, he finds Burrow, who intelligently chips back to him. Alas his header is saved by Rice.  MacDonald pushes Burrow in the back but the Imps get nothing.  Young in space again lets another rip but Townsend makes it look easy.  Another effort from Young is blocked by Mendy who is throwing life and limb into every challenge.

The Gulls are forcing the play and Richard’s  effort gets a corner. Every Gull seems to be hovering in the area but Mendy heads imperiously away.  Mendy starts a ten pass Lincoln move that puts Tomlinson away, alas he shoots from 30 yards is parried for a corner by Rice throat when Burrow was in one feels. Diagne is pushed by Briscoe yet the incredibly inept officials decide on a corner, even though he was nowhere near the ball.  Young delivers the corner to MacDonald who rises supreme only to be denied by a terrific save from Townsend.

Torquay level. A move down the left by Cruise see him easily skin Caprice and centre.  Acheampong beats Mendy to the ball and touches in neatly in with his thigh from six yards  for the equaliser.  Tomlinson is crudely brought down by Young – there is some vendetta going on between those two – who gets a yellow card.  The game is still end to end and open despite the Imps conceding numerical advantage. Mind you it is so normal we probably train that way.

Hearts in mouths time from another Young corner.  Thankfully Acheampong gets above Mendy and thankfully heads wide. The Imps counter again, finding Burrow who has held thing brilliantly today. he touches to Power who lashes wide.  The officials have been bad for both sides. An all of  thirty hard header from Cruise finds Briscoe in acres yet the referee fails to play the advantage and pulls it back. Mind Briscoe seems to be carrying some weight since his lethal Mansfield days.

Nolan initially does well but is robbed as he tries to find Tomlinson.  Cameron makes the most of it and plays to Acheampong. He gets the better of Diagne and looks away until Mendy times a do or die challenge brilliantly. The Frenchman then shows his class to beat Briscoe and play to Power.  Ajala is brought on for Briscoe in time to see Burrow twist, turn and fizz an effort wide.

Second Half

Winger Chapel comes on for MacDonald according to the board of the fourth official prior to Kick-off. Wakefield is the one who has actually made way for him. Shockingly amateur.  The Gulls have clearly gone for pace and a return to their normal 4-4-2 formation.  Some tough challenges from both side are missed by the referee, during scrappy early exchanges. The Gulls do win a corner that comes to nothing.  The referee finally has a chat with both Cameron and Caprice.

The game is still lacking any real pace as the Imps appear to be going 4-2-1-2 with Power and Nolan deep and Marshall supporting the two front men. Fair play to the manager, its dangerous but Simmo is trying to win it. Tomlinson gets forward but is crowded out and Acheampong fluffs his lines with one well over the bar.  Power superbly plays in Caprice but the ball runs out for a goal kick.  Chapell gets by Newton but his long range effort it well wide. Cameron crosses for Chapell  the effortAjala also shoots well over the bar.

The pressure is growing, Cameron, weaves his way through, into an inch-perfect challenge from Mendy and then Power clears our lines. Ajala thunders one against the bar as the pressure grows and ultimately tells. A brilliant twenty-five yard bullet from Richard’s, the Gulls star in the middle today, pings off the turf and into the bottom right corner, giving Townsend no chance.

A sixty-second minute double substitution sees Jordan come on for Marshall and Ledsham replace Nolan. Tomlinson beats his man but MacDonald is alert to the danger and clears in the nick of time.  Power is fouled and squares up to Richards.  Power delivers Tomlinson gets amongst them but there is no way we are getting a penalty out of that.  The momentum is with the Gulls but the Imps look useful on the counter if the final ball can just get to the feet of Burrow or Tomlinson.

A heartbreaking third comes with Mendy hopelessly exposed. Young carries the ball forward and times his ball to Acheampong superbly. The giant centre-forward gets beyond Mendy and consummately side-foots into the corner from twelve yards.  A last throw of the dice sees Robinson on for Caprice. This could give Acheampong his hat-trick but we may as well lose by three than two.  Man of the match Richards sweeps sweetly out wide and a a left-footer from Cameron, from just outside the box, is easily saved from Townsend

A long throw from Jordan  finds Robinson. He rises well but his header is saved and injures himself against the iron jaw of Downes in the process.  It’s looking like nine-men now as he receives lengthy treatment and then goes off for stitches. A brave rearguard action ensues as the Gulls wideboys stretch us. Acheampong lashes a hat-trick opportunity wide and Ajala has an effort charged down by Diagne. One winger Chapell finds the other, Cameron, who heads over. Courtney also shoots wide from outside the box with three Gulls better placed.

Ajala is denied a crisp effort form Townsend before Young fizzes over. Fortunately normal service is resumed as he returns to give the Imps our expected one man disadvantage, playing in the impressive Power. Alas his effort goes wide. The part of tens continues as ten minutes of injury time are endured with Acheampong being replaced by Yeoman halfway through.

That is not taking anything away from Torquay. They have a strong and robust side that will take plenty of points home and away this season.   As for the Imps situation.  Is it a question of our reputation preceding us or just poor refereeing, where officials prejudge a side boasting plenty of players well over six-foot? It’s a shame because this side can play football and look good for a play-off charge.

This is the page for you, the loyalist fans in football to bookmark. The away fans ground guide is a life saving bible when its time to put the tea cosy on the hip flask or Satnav / tablet.  Its a tough winter for die-hard away fans planning to travel to a game at the weekend, or a freezing Tuesday. But help is at hand is at hand for the hardy, should that be foolhardy having done about 60 league grounds myself plus never quite too many non-league ones as well.  Fear not there will be no more ‘well you should have bought your own flask you silly man – where do think this is the Ritz of London’.  Indeed a customer service and kindness to fellow man double award is still due there, although as a Gentleman who plays life with a straight bat you don’t look back in anger.

Fear not together with places of interest  each ground guide is full of facts about the stadium, disabled facilities and the transport links and details for Mr & Mrs SATNAV to ensure that you get there with time to spare to take in the views and the ambience. The following guide in association with Duncan Evans includes ticket prices, where to eat & drink, pictures and ground layout plus reviews from away supporters.  There is even a little bit about the club’s fanzines, programme, traditional rivalries and crowd stats to give you an idea of how loud you will need to shout to be heard.

Lincoln V Torquay The Teams, Schemes & Romantic Impish Dreams

Torquay United a team with a penchant for drawing, adjusting to life back in the Conference aka The People’s Premiership. A humorous place where pre-match pints are plentiful, safe from the rapacious realm of the League. Then again the money clubs oft do dominate against the spirited part-time sides, for, this is where any man with the cash for a van – can.  In the second chance Sincil Bank saloon, we Imps have started to fall in love with our club again. Having wiped away the tears, polished our horns and filed our hooves,  sons and daughters of Imdom again make for the San Sincil each week anticipating better things. Is it a dream, why no and it got better on POETS day as Sam-Yorke reported for duty at four.

Mmmm Sincil Salivates…………..

The challenge:

The on-fire Imps face ex-League opposition Torquay United , a side adjusting to the Division, but, boo-hiss – unbeaten since opening day. After the opener, a 1-3 reverse baptism of fire at fancied Gateshead, the  clipped Gulls have beaten whipping boys Welling and, drawn three games, including a blood guts and bruising battle that saw more cards than Christmas, Gulls-wise 3 yellows and a red for Bowman. He will miss the last of his three games (violent conduct) against City but there is plenty more to worry about from the footballing cream of East Devon.

Chris Hargreaves has fashioned a strong and robust side that have become draw specialists.  Very much a conventional 4-4-2 the two wingers are quick and skilful. Chapel is an ex-Blade and Cameron started out at Northampton, was pinched by Villa at a young age then sold to Rotherham.  Cameron leads the goal charts (2) and the assists (2). So the Gulls are pacey and tricky out wide, but, they are also big and strong and quick up top. The front two Imps will be familiar with  in Acheampong (Barnet) and Ajala (Welling) with the latter playing off the former, the two can be a handful for Brownie & Diagne.

The full-backs will have problems against Newton and Caprice, but then who hasn’t this season thus far. We will be missing Hamza, although there are plenty of options including Ledsham who appears fully fit again. Tomlinson and Burrow will give Downes and Ives a torrid time.  That said the duo are a decent centre-back pairing but the pace of the trio running from deep, is not the cosmopolitan formation they are used to dealing with.

It will be an interesting game between two counter-attacking sides, with any result possible.  Hats off to any Gulls who make a very long trip indeed.

He’s Back!……Imps beat L2 Sides & Conference Clubs to sign Sam-Yorke

Lincoln City beat off York City, Tranmere Rovers  Grimsby Town and FC Halifax for the services of Cambridge United striker Delano Sam-Yorke, the darling of the Imps last season. The fast furious and brilliant Bank babe returns on loan until January.  Mmmm Sincil Salivates…………..

Thanks for reading STMI

With Imps still scratching their eyes at our play-off form, well ten points from five games is certainly there or there abouts , the news that Delano Sam-Yorke is back is fantastic news.  Whether he will be ready to play tomorrow is another matter, but, with a tough 8-game programme on the horizon he will be needed.

Delano Sam-Yorke bagged 3 goals in 9 League games for the Imps last season, but having made just two starts this League 2 term Cambridge agreed to a loan after moves to League rivals York City and, Tranmere Rovers fell through.

Sam returned to Cambridge last season and went to to celebrate promotion and FAT trophy success. He bagged two against FC Halifax in the last but one game of last season.  Chairman Bob Dorian had vowed to break the bank for him, but a permanent deal had appeared to stall.

His pace power and skill thrills. Welcome back to the Bank Delano… Mmmm Sincil Salivates…………..

Scunthorpe United pay Most in League 2 For Agents Fees

Scunthorpe United’s Lincolnshire rivals Lincoln City and Grimsby Town will find the  tenth Football League Agents’ Fees Report interesting reading.  Imps still ponder the mystery fee for Boyce, now on loan at the Mariners and can at least take solace from the fact that our now richer county rivals appear to be paying through the nose.

The report below includes the Championship, League One and League 2 clubs.

Thanks for reading STMI

The tenth Football League Agents’ Fees Report shows League Two Clubs spent £595,995  during the 2013/14 seasonspent £595,995  during the 2013/14 season. Only Scunthorpe United, who bought  broke six-figures parting with £121,480, Portsmouth £85,150 and promoted Fleetwood £70,593.   Oxford hit the bullseye with £50k, while the rest of the division certainly parted with relatively little.

Eleven clubs spent under ten thousand, three of which refused to part with a penny despite accomplishing 87 transactions.  A round of applause please for Accrington, AFC Wimbledon and Hartlepool, Jeff Stellings imperious monkeyhangers. This was almost a tenth of the 907 transactions.  Certainly necessity is the mother of invention, but League 2 did half the transactions of League One at a quarter of the cost.  With Scunthorpe gone this season and Portsmouth now out of the jaws of financial despair, it will be slim pickings this year in League 2.

The League One Clubs Agent’s fees bill came to £2.4 millions last year with three clubs making up half of the total. Perhaps it is a sign of the new TV deal’s increasing polarisation of the game, or common sense on the part of the clubs. In reality with over a thousand players looking for work (and rising) it is probably a well overdue return to the principles of supply and demand.

No surprise that Wolverhampton Wanderer’s parted with £571,350, largely getting rid of the Premiership hangover it has to be said.  Bristol City another big club falling upon hard times spent £339,467 but Brentford in third continues their ambition climb through the Divisions.  The Bees were stung for £253,236  according to the Football League report ending 2013.  The division saw 1076 transactions  including 385 transfers and 356 loans.

The shrewd shrews certainly lived up to their name spending nothing.  No surprises that Crewe, with an enviable youth set up that provides a conveyor belt of talent, spent £6,066. Walsall spent just a monkey more (£500) with Carlisle also putting under ten grand in the agents hands.

Ex-Leeds winger joins the Spireites as ex-Imp stays at Stags

Ex-Leeds United winger Gboly Ariyibi, has joined Chesterfield FC  after they failed to land Mansfield Town and ex-Lincoln City winger Sam Clucas.  Ariyibi has been on trial with the Spireites and has an impressive pedigree, having graduated through the Southampton youth system before joining Leeds last season, making one appearance against of all clubs, Nottingham Forest.

So Mansfield Town continue to hold onto the services of the flying winger who never got the breaks at the Imps. His dream move from Debenham’s shelf stacker to a full-time contract at his home town club yielded just the one start against Darlington, the last game of Peter Jackson’s tenure.

Sam went on star at Hereford before going from strength to strength at the Stags (he opted for them over Crewe because he could return to his Lincoln roots).  This time last year he was the subject of interest from Nottingham Forest, but injury stopped a second improved bid from Forest, currently, top of the Championship table.

The Forest bid had been rumoured to be excess of £500,000, even Chesterfield cannot afford that, particularly as a central striker appears to be also on the cards over the next few days. The Spireites also had a bid knocked back  but will not follow up with a second after signing Ex-Leeds United winger Gboly Ariyibi, today.

STMI Vanarama Preview – Rovers to Topple Halifax with Bees, Greens & Imps to profit?

Bristol Rovers could beat FC Halifax tomorrow and, with Barnet FC, Forest Green Rovers and Eastleigh also away from home a win for the Bees could put them top. With Torquay  United at the Bank, a win for the mighty Imps could put us second.

Then again it has been a tough adjustment for Rovers who will pose the first ex-League test for Halifax, our joint-tips to win the division with the most complete side in the division. We’d have them as a corner on our bingo card every week. So should Barnet, our other tips for top two. The Bees have a 100% away record scoring five at Chester and two at Nuneaton without reply. A 1-2 home defeat to Lincoln aside they have earned 4 clean sheets this season and won at home against ex-League Club Bristol Rovers  2-0 and thumped Dartford 4-0 on Monday.

FGR should beat second bottom Welling to move within a point, while away specialists Barnet come up against Southport, the top part-time side in the country for the last few years.  Eastleigh, newly promoted but surprisingly fourth, will do well to get a point at Macclesfield gaining momentum in 9th.

The only one of the top five to play at home are the reborn Imps who host Torquay (14th) the draw specialists. However the Imps deserved better against FC Halifax, conceding a penalty and going down to ten men for the second game on the trot. With luck and the goal prowess of two in two Tomlinson the Imps could go second.

Money club Gateshead and Wrexham could do the game with  thirteen goals in two games Grimsby just a point behind. They are frying in the Fisheries, such is the optimism up their they have even released goal machine Alan Connell.

What a healthy set of statistics we have after 5 games with Bristol Rovers against Grimsby attracting 7,019, Wrexham attracting 4,068 against Gateshead and FGR enjoying a bumper 3,781 for the West Country derby against Bristol Rovers. The Mariners managed 3,710 at home to Nuneaton but the Imps look likely get into the top two when they entertain the Mariners early next month. Grimsby look set to bring 1800 and, with both the Lincolnshire giants flying a massive crowd is assured.

The People’s Premiership may not have the cash of the top tier but you can get a ticket and experience traditional football full of thrills and spills in the flesh. So to cut to the chase then fellow football fans.
