Lincoln Loco Pulls Into Boreham Wood Then?

The three-one Torquay United away romp following on from the Tranmere Rovers and Aldershot Town wins ensured the Lincoln City Loco entered the play-offs. Nosebleed time for one of the longest serving League clubs perhaps ahead of a second successive away test tomorrow night (Wed 25th) at Boreham Wood FC. Moyses mission certainly seems to be gathering steam among the loyalist fans in football but it is the emerging City of Lincoln that needs the Football League every bit as much as the vociferous and Mighty Imps.

Thanks as ever for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The long-overdue brace from Waterfall (16’& 74′) – it could have been a hat-trick for the centre-half – with hit-man Hearn chiming in with his eighth of the season (25′) saw the fifth placed play-off birth realised but it has been coming. The Mighty Imps go into this one looking for their fourth win on the spin having won four and lost one of their last five excluding the Cup. Then again Lincoln do not traditionally do well in the FA Cup which would afford the much needed gravy to really float the City boat.

Those that cannot go will be huddled around their transistor radios listening to BBC RADIO LINCS  with Sportin Hortin and Tommos dulcet tones, a throw back to the traditional values the Cathedral City casts far and wide.  The Mighty Imps will however be well backed, as ever, for the long trip to Hertfordshire on the morrow with more than a few borrowing money to go. They should be forgiven for this is Christmas come early for a club managed by a fan who has put his own dough in to fuel the dream and prove he is the man with a plan that can.

Moyses, a firm but fair straight talking man motivator, could get some help with that ahead of the transfer window as the turnstile clicks gather pace. With 3176 at the last Tranmere home game a win tonight could see 3500 at home to Welling on Saturday – and they wont be bringing many. A crowd funder initiative raised £16,440 to fund this side in the summer as the fans did their bit pre-season but now is the time to get on the Lincoln Loco and cheer the Imps over the line with a new crowdfunder initiative  – So come on imps back Moyses Mission The Next Goal #teamlincoln.

Imps V AFC Telford Can Imps Break The Mould?

AFC Telford and, the phrase three times a charm comes to mind for Lincoln City.  Having lost to Nuneaton and Southport, we now face Liam Watson’s bottom feeders Telford. That Lincoln sit just one point and one place above them in the current form table. Says something. We are 22nd, Telford 23rd and Southport 24th.  The fates have conspired against us, but not Watson who  left Southport to join the relegated Telford  and turn them into Conference North Champions last season.

Watson has struggled as has Simmo. According to BBC Radio Lincolnshire last night he needs to deliver in the next two games.  Pressure then with Hamza the fourth red of the season (we had one rescinded remember) missing too today. We will leave the stats this week as they are as depressing as the current mood amongst the fantastic fans of our football club.  Well, save the table below which illustrates that a two or three goal win today would put a different completion on a run that see yet another manager failing to deliver what we feel is our birthright at this club. I am afraid that is down to a competitive budget and an ambitious board. Fear not, I wont be discussing that again as it has seen myself and three others banned indefinitely from Sincil Bank.  Sincil Silence is clearly golden.  If the club can spring back it would appear those players awaiting new deals from the summer will indeed be finally offered new ones. If not they will be sold in the winter window, doubtless fetching a pretty penny with five just months until the summer window.

Southport V Imps – Brabin Planning Tuesday Rumble in the 6-Pointer.

After the Nuneaton Town under Daish, Southport FC under former Luton Town & Cambridge United manager Gary Brabin is not an enticing thought on a Tuesday night.  Yes after the no show The Sandgrounders are another side who have appointed a new manager. STMI were the first to break the news last night and feared the worst – are we cursed? In truth we were also still gutted gutted that he had agreed personal terms so early in the day because Brabin can now call in favours from all his mates in the North-West (Gary’s born and bread in Liverpool so forget porridge because raw meat scouse and 4-4-2 builds football teams in these parts) and potentially have the cabs there for this afternoon.  A manager with a 49.6% win rate in the non-League has clearly been waiting for the right job since Luton discarded him in 2012. He also waited a year before returning after Cambridge – and that was for the Luton job.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The Challenge

Bring back Martin Foyle because Gary Brabin’s side will be bang up for it. They will be wanting to prove a point to the manager and Brabin will be wanting to prove a point to a Lincoln board that  passed him by  not that long ago.  As to whether he can turn Southport who really battled back twice before going down 2-5 at home to Woking, well that is the big question.  The Imps will be missing Anderson and Hamza, while MacDonald went off injured for ‘Port at the weekend.

Brodie and Luke Foster  might also want The Imps to think they should have tried a little harder in recent years too. Challoner  and Fitzpatrick are useful yet Newton and Miller can really get to grips with that back four.  As to whether Brabin will revert to the 3-5-2 that got the smash and grab 1-0 at the Cods or go with his preferred 4-4-2 for his first game is anyone’s guess.  One thing is for sure we play a part-time side that can pay more than we can, otherwise Mr Brabin would not have put his slippers in the oven and come out on a wet and windy Tuesday night. Then again they are his local club.

Nuneaton Town V Imps – 6 Points in 96 hours or Bust For Simmo’s Dogs of War

Nuneaton Town and Southport in the next four days could well get our season back on track. Unbeaten in two the Imps will test any lingering hopes of a play-off flirt against two teams that will not be push-overs despite their form. Nuneaton have a new boss in Liam Daish a miracle worker in Conference circles, Have we met him and them at just the right time?

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The Challenge

Liam Daish is no mug, indeed I actually tipped him for the job for another site I write for and praised the wisdom of the Nuneaton board. If anyone is going to fill promotion guru Kevin Wilkin’s boots it is Daish, not reid who failed abysmally after just five months.  Liam had a stand named after him at Ebbsfleet and did fantastic things with a budget even worse than the one Simmo has and he was funded by a shambolic website that was about as consistant as the old school dinners custard. The Fleet did sink under him due to a parlous financial position and, when the new guys came in they decided they wanted a fresh set of ideas. He then took some time out waiting for the right kind of challenge. This guy with backing and a regular,  sustained budget, could get them into the Football League.

The Boro can feel themselves unfortunate after battling hard until Sole got a last minute set-peice wonder-strike to settle matters.  Daish has been making plenty of loan enquiries  during his first week with winger Dawson arriving from Leicester City (he graduated through the Wigan academy before becoming a Fox last summer.  He should start, Dawson and Armson will be trouble for Miller and Newton tomorrow as they come forward.

As you would expect in that neck of the woods the Coventry connection is strong, ex-Sky Blue Lee Fowler (played for Harriers too) makes the midfield tick, with a 4-3-3 formation used last time out to good effect. Streete, the centre-back is a clever player too and would do a job in League 2 at the right club.  Keeper Reice Charles-Cook  is on loan from Coventry until January, he is useful with good positioning reactions and distribution.  Ex-Imp Nicky Eaden  is also involved behind the scenes at a club that has some very ambitious plans if they can stay up.

Vanarama Conference Premier Champions at the Ready?

Barnet, Bristol Rovers, Wrexham FC,  FC Halifax, Torquay UTD, Woking FC and Gateshead FC are all there or thereabouts in the  Vanarama Conference aka the People’s Premiership as we get ready to salute the heroes and zeroes that will earn those tears and jeers again this Saturday.  Simon Yeo the ex Chester FC and Imp goal machines tries to guess the scores, but as he says

‘Games are won and lost on the pitch by goals and more than a bit of luck.  Everybody is a champion when we win or score but I wont say what I’ve been called up the wrong end or on a bad day’

Thanks as ever for reading STMI

Welcome to The Vanarama Conference Premier – aka The People’s Premiership Football Bingo bunch of fives including the fixtures, last fives,  left peg synopsis, Simon Yeo’s result forecast and the Vanarama goal machines for Sat 4th October.  Enjoy fellow football fans enjoy we hope to make football Bingo part of your Saturday experience.

Vanarama Conference logo.png Barnet face Eastleigh who got a draw against 9- man Bristol Rovers after keeper Mildenhall and Clarke saw red.  The Bees look certain to stay top given The Dragons burned them to a cinder with 3-0 not exactly flattering the score. The Bees have actually been suffering with injuries during their recent romp to the top and returning goal machine Cook could feature.  Halifax entertain Altrincham after beating Alfreton 2-0 with both sides in the relegation zone.  The Shaymen have had an easy run with Telfor (5-0) the week before.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngWrexham now third may have to wait to progress then, although the trip to Torquay (4th) may have come at the right time for the Dragons. The Gulls were flying until Telford and Forest Green inflicted two defeats in a week. Two reds and injuries have not helped but with most returning this is the game of the day and a play-off six-pointer.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngWoking went back to winning ways and should use the trip to Southport as a springboard in both their away form and a continued assault on the play-offs. Southport, beat Grimsby away 1-0 to move out of the drop zone on goal difference. Its a start but Simmo’s Imps could do with a Cards win as we go there Tuesday.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngBristol Rovers entertain Dover tomorrow and Dartford on Tuesday suggesting the next four days will see the giants of the division really prove their credentials. Dover have won two on the trot, conceding none and got three against Aldershot in midweek.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngGateshead also need to get back to winning ways after a draw at Lincoln, with Braintree the visitors. The Iron held Barnet 1-1 on Tuesday and Halifax 0-0 last week.  Great a passing side as the Heed is they will need to cut to the chase with Devonshire’s pride and joy.

Imps V Gateshead – Preview Teams Schemes Form Heroes & Villains

Gateshead FC had Luton Town and Cambridge Utd in front of them last year and have Torquay United, FC Halifax and Barnet FC this.  Can a  terrific attacking side with some quality players and a canny manager go one better in the play-off final this season? Perhaps for  The Head are stronger and more experienced and have not given the rest of the division the head start they did last year.

Sincil Bank Salivates…………..

The challenge:

A very tough game indeed against a top four side who finished third last season and look destined to challenge again.  For those who think we should be beating sides like this, think again. Last season the Heed attracted 8,144 to their play-off game with Grimsby. They have not kept hold of too many of those floaters but crowds are up 60% this season and almost three times the season before.  This is a side on the rise, indeed we are like two ships going in the opposite direction. The Heed are ambitious with the ability to tie players to contracts and sell them on.  Mills bagged 250,000 from Posh for Maddison which should go to at least £600,000 with add-ons.

They have players than can hurt us all over the park unless we are really on our game.  Four years this fixture would not have been seen as a tough one. Now Gateshead have a budget more than double ours with a core support that is 60% of our own over the season. Good luck lads you are going to need it.

Imps V Silkmen: Teams Schemes – A Sweet Dream or Scream?

The visit of Macclesfield Town  will always evoke memories, but the Imps cannot afford to be side-tracked. This game is vital, with Lincoln very much the underdogs tomorrow in a game Simmo and his six-foot soldiers simply have to win. Fairhurst and Turnbull are back too, in a watershed game for our promising squad cobbled together for an even smaller budget than last season. Cheer them on Imps because this is as good as it is going to get you feel. We simply must turn the season and get some of these players signed before the end of it. Otherwise it is back to the drawing board and hopefully not the all too familiar Square One.

Sincil Bank Salivates…………..

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The challenge:

Fairhurst and Turnbull will be out to prove a point then as a mesmerising Macclesfield, beaten only by Chester 0-1 in their last 11, aim to come back and pile pressure on their old manager Simmo.  I wont use alternative phraseology as Big Keith and Butch will always loom large over this fixture. What a task we face, pace, strength, a threat at set-pieces, who score from all over the park. Pilkington and Waterfall (Boyce’s buddy & team-mate at Trinity and now Scunthorpe) are a tremendous centre-back pairing to deal with in either box with central midfield maestro Turnbull conducting consistently and also amongst the goals and assists. This is one for Sam-Yorke and Tommo you feel with Power hopefully rested too as we seek to beat a side in play-off chasing form. Best leave it at that really otherwise the turnstile clicks might be even fewer as the Imps seek to change their luck and run of form.  Believe, keep the faith, the alternative is for those pessimists who are never disappointed.

Aldershot V Imps STMI Preview Teams & Schemes, Stats & Head to Head

Aldershot relegated Lincoln City back in May 2010, so this one will always arouse emotion, yet in reality both of these ex-League clubs are still punching well below their ability this season.  Andy Scott has the side and those Chelsea connections, yet still they have failed to get them out of the bottom half.  Let us hope they are not the latest side that we roll out the red card carpet for then.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The Imps can’t seem to buy a win at the moment after suspensions injuries and defensive frailties have seen that optimistic start almost erased from the memory. Young Tom Anderson comes in from Burnley on loan to strengthen a back four that has seen Brown join Tom Miller on the sidelines.  The Shots form is almost as bad as the Imps with their draw and three defeats almost comparable to our one win and five defeats.  Well got to put a brave front on it, because both sides are punching well below their respective weights and after all the Shots relegated us on that faithful day in May (2010) as 8,000 hearts sank at Sincil Bank

The problem is the Shots are terrific up front with Williams and Scott a dream team. A passing side who can mix it up, the central midfield duo of  Lathorpe and  Forbes work hard with the two wide-boys ably assisted by Oastler, on the right and, perhaps even the fastest full-back in the division.  The Shots are a clean side with just the five bookings thus far. They do try to play and keep it on the ground, that begins with the composure of the  two big centre-backs.   Scott (3) and midfield man Lathorpe (2) lead the he assists charts, suggesting with Oastler overlapping down the flank that we can expect to get hit right left and centre tomorrow.  Then again we are due a break.

Preview Welling V Imps – Six-pointer Tomorrow Then!

Lincoln City go to twenty-second placed Welling United hoping for a win and a long overdue clean sheet against The Wings who have yet to be beaten at home.  City cannot take too much for granted against our hosts who have garnered one less point than ourselves in the last six games and lost one fewer game.  We are due a draw but the optimist in me suggests another five goal thriller – the thing is which way?

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

The Imps desperately need to get our season back on track after defensive lapses have seen us concede far too many, thus undoing the good work the refreshing forward line has delivered time and time again.  Beautyman is the leading scorer coming from midfield, so Mendy and Nolan need a big performance tomorrow night. The front three are quick, although Nouble will be missing after a second yellow at Wrexham. Even still the 10 Wings only went  2-1 to the division’s traditionally best passing side.  Gallagher will need to be contained too, it will be an interesting tussle if he and Hamza lock horns during the game. The Wings are a big strong side, with a devastating long throw, in truth they are not getting the results their play and tenacity deserves.

Preview Lincoln V Bristol Rovers – Teams Schemes & Football League Dreams

Bristol Rovers come to Lincoln for another massive game at the Bank. Why its just like old times as we renew acquaintances with another ex-League club, hopefully filling most of the old home end to boot to boost the coffers twice in a week.

Sincil Bank Salivates…………..

The challenge:

Bristol Rovers are the best supported club in the Conference with a big budget, Cunnington, who we know really well and now possess the services of former QPR and Milton Keynes Dons winger Angelo Balanta until the end of the season. Monkhouse is the star down one flank along with Brown the overlapping full-back, suggesting  Balanta may start on the bench or go on the right, as he can cut in and finish with devastating effect.  Caprice and Mendy will be busy then.

Rovers just about edge us in the current form stakes, conceding few goals, beaten only by Barnet and Braintree this season (2-0 each time).  The Gas can step on it and pass the ball well, think Grimsby,  with an aesthetically pleasing style, guile and a smile. The win over 10-man Wrexham in mid-week was a good result for a relegated side now finding their feet in the division, against the bruisers, punch-drunk losers and of course the money clubs.

The Imps physical presence and counter-attacking flare will worry them down the flanks and at set-pieces. Then again our new ‘attack is the best form of defence’ mantra will make for an open affair.   Hamza will be a novelty, then again he is a one off who is in his central midfield element so far this season.  No injuries reported from the Sincal six-foot soldiers ditto from the Memorial, although a change in away form is needed suggesting Clarke may change things early and he has the depth and talent to do it. Ellis Harrison, for instance, who has returned from international duty with Wales.
