Conference Wrap – It Rains Goals & Crowds in the People’s Premiership

Woking FC Win   Barnet FC, Gateshead FC ,  Bristol Rovers and Forest Green Rovers draw FC Halifax Torquay Utd & Wrexham FC lose in front of 8,163. Yes you did read that correctly just one of the top seven  won on a day when it rained goals in the Vanarama Conference Premier aka the People’s Premiership. The Mighty Imps beat AFC Telford to end the slump and thus move to within seven points of the play-offs (or 6 from relegation depending on whether your glass is half full or not.  Grab that beverage and some popcorn for some crackle, pop and snap because it is time for Neil’s big, fat Conference Premier wrap.

Barnet buzzed as Mad Dog’s men swarmed to three up thanks to  a gem of a Lopez free-kick on 32. Ditto  Cook 38′ and then the Akinde cometh on  43′ to complete a whirlwind move.  Everyone will be after the Steve Burr recipe for half-time tea as The Harriers achieved  three second-half flyby in return.  Gash smashed on 58′ before two corners from Nicholson found the head of Blissett on 80′ and 82′.

Woking and Eastleigh do look as if they will continue to surprise a few and perhaps even last the distance with a couple of stand-out results.  Rendell 52′Morgan 66′ and Payne 90′ did the damage for the wild Cards at Altrincham as Woking’s passing game exposed the ten- man hosts who finished with nine after an injury the Crowther.   Eastleigh stormed back to dump the Shaymen fifth.  FC Halifax went a goal up though a Boden penalty on 16′.  Then it was all rhyme as Reason 22′ Green 53′ Fleetwood 76′ and Strevens 90 sent most of the 1500 home happy.  The Spitfires are  soaring high above the clouds on and off the pitch with that new 2200 away end ready for the FA Cup and the big games ahead.

Gateshead draw again, this time at Forest Green , with Rovers now unbeaten now in four.  Parkin finished a fine move for the hosts on 71′ before Howe got swept home an equaliser just 6 minutes later to crown his début.   Ten-man Aldershot held Bristol Rovers in a stormer of a 2-2 draw. The Shots went ahead with a Williams penalty on  16′ (pen) after Parkes tried to play second keeper. Rovers replied with Monkhouse on 42′ and then went ahead with a penalty of their own from Taylor 68′. Roberts then decided to play the ‘panto’ hero and villain hitting a whistler into the top corner on 77′ before the one owned by the referee called time on his contribution with a yellow.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Torquay travelled to Alfreton with the Reds all but dead and second from bottom. They are still there but after this wonderful 4-2 win the gap from salvation is just one win away.  The hosts took the lead through Hawley 18′, before Briscoe curled in a beauty on the half hour. Shaw put Alfreton 2-1 up on the  stroke of half-time  but Briscoe bagged his brace on 54′ to square matters.   Clayton made it  three-two with a chip to grace Cleethorpes on 70′ before Hawley brought the house down to celebrate his own double.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngThe Reds will want to have an eye on Dartford rather than Southport,  gaffer Gary Brabin continues to refresh the parts other men cannot reach as two loans, George 69′ and super-sub Bakayoko 84′ secured the points with a 2-0 win at Alan Devonshire’s Braintree. Welling did themselves a favour with a 4-1 win home win over fellow strugglers Nuneaton to pull further away from the trapdoor.  As did Dover with a 2-0 win over Chester.  Dartford earned a vital point at home to high-flying Macclesfield to keep them one place above Southport now unbeaten in two. Brabin’s boys have taken four points in his first five days, to sit one place above  the drop zone.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngWrexham celebrated their 150th year in front of 8163 – well almost.  Carrington brought down Thomas to allow John-Lewis to convert from the spot on 28′ and the Dragons huffed and puffed and passed, yet could not blow the trawler onto the rocks.  During a second half reminiscent of the tempest it was poetry and passion in motion with Moult sent off for ‘fistycuffs ‘ with Disley.

Wrexham manager Kevin Wilkin told BBC Radio Wales:

“To get such a fantastic gate and to play in the manner that we did for long spells of the first half was really disappointing. “We came out and gave a better account of ourselves up until the sending off in the second half. “We had Grimsby camped in and it’s important you keep 11 men on the field. “I didn’t see what the sending off was for but on my understanding it was for a stamp, if that’s the case we can’t have any complaints.”

Indeed Kevin, I too have peripheral vision issues with my right eye.

Conference Premier The Tuesday Knee-Tremblers, Manager & Player of the Month

FC Halifax V Wrexham FC is a 6-pointer because, Torquay United,  Gateshead FC and leaders Barnet FC will all gain at the losers expense.  As for the Mighty Imps the Brabin cometh at Southport – surely they could have given Martin Foyle one more game.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

FC Halifax V Wrexham looks like the game of the night with both sides desperate to bounce back after defeats at the weekend. The Shaymen were shocked 1-3 at home against Altrincham whilst Wrexham went down 2-1 at the Gulls, now third in the table.   Barnet now five points clear will not fancy Macclesfield on a Tuesday night but their fire-power, professionalism and Mad Dog Martin Allen  will ensure no slip ups.

Gateshead have an easy one against Alfreton so none of the top three can afford a slip with poor Woking without a game in fourth just hoping for an upset or a draw.  Bristol Rovers still have a great chance to jump into the play-offs with a home win over Dartford. Mind you most were expecting that before Dover got a point on Saturday.

The Imps have a 6-pointer at Southport, with Brabin turning up just in time to put his Newtons cradle on his desk and a much prized Lincoln City scalp on his wall. Full preview HERE. We really do need a budget boost or a white knight to back the expectations of Impdom, otherwise  we are in this division for good.

Congratulations to Bristol Rovers Darrell Clarke and Gateshead’s Danny Wright click their names for the Manager & player of the month  left peg synopsis.

Conference Wrap: Promotion? Relegation? Humbug! Fear Not There’s always ADMIN!

Busy Bees Barnet, Torquay Utd, Gateshead FC & Woking FC win,  Bristol Rovers draw FC Halifax & Wrexham FC lose. Alas readers the Imps flag is at half mast again this evening for the Vanarama Conference aka the People’s Premiership can be a cruel mistress with just two up and four down.  Grab a beverage and some popcorn for they do say joy is as entertaining as pain and ours are the teams to follow through the odd bit of sunshine and bucket loads of rain.

Barnet move five points clear thanks to a Hoskins strike to settle things against Eastleigh who had held 9 man Bristol Rovers and the wrath of the gods on Tuesday.  Not content with scoring with his first touch in the 5-0 win over Altrincham Hoskins  hit the post with his first touch in this. The buzzing Bees were denied a penalty before you’ve guessed it Hoskins fired home a deflection to give the buzzing Bees a first half lead.  Eastleigh had a goal disallowed and the luck continued when FC Halifax crashed 0-3 at home to Altrincham and no goal machine Reeve did not even get on the score sheet. Clee 34′ Lawrie 77′ and ex-Imp Perry 81′ blew them away before a Boden consolation chime three minuted from time.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

The Gulls are back in business but had to come from behind in the division’s biggie. Goal machine Moult charged down the keepers clearance before finishing with aplomb. Cometh the hour cometh the man as Briscoe rounded off a superb cut and thust move by drilling home. Young then brought the house down late on with a contender for goal of the season. Bowman was unloading some wayward arrows all afternoon until Captain Young showed him the true meaning of power and panache. Having struck a post with a free-kick he hit a hallelujah haymaker that whistled all of twenty-five yards  to almost rip the net.  The third placed birds will be frying and flying tonight with the Steam beers gushing out of their ears.

Woking high-fived Southport through the relegation trap door and into the bottom four. Cheers after losing to Nuneaton we Imps need to meat someone more demoralised than ourselves on Tuesday.  Rendell gave Woking the lead before Lewis made it two. Fitzpatrick seemed to get Southport back in it then Sole got another of his sensational free kicks to restore the two goal cushion. Port never give up and got a lifeline from a towering header from Luke Foster. Time for the Rendell show.. First he headed in a peach of a cross from Lewis as the end to end battle of brains versus brawn continued.  Payne had to be stopped by hook or by crook and, Foster duly did, allowing Rendell to complete his hat-trick with a clinical penalty. An outstanding advert for the people’s premiership this one.

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Cox put Braintree one up ten minutes before the break to stun Gateshead who had passed the parcel more cautiously than the version played in a 1970’s Northern Irish pub.  But when they click they  click as three in six minutes blew Braintree away thanks to Finnigan 69′ Turnbull 72′ and a superb Shaw strike on 75′.  Wrexham and Bristol Rovers both dropped out of the play-off places although it was a massive shock to  Rovers who in fairness had the game in the bag. Bristol Rovers 6000 plus punters and, Gas gaffer Clarke, thought Cunnington’s  first half strike had seen them play-off bound. Then the boys from the white cliffs finally chalked one up and gave the pirates a few sunken chests with a 90th minute Murphy volley that was very much against the tide. Not quite hanging homself from the Clifton Bridge quite yet Darrell Clarke told BBC Radio Bristol:

“It’s a very quiet changing rooms in there. Obviously the lads are very disappointed, as well as the staff, because we should not have chucked it away. We should be sat here with three points. “We have got to be more clinical at the top end, but then again there keeper has made good saves. They’ve put their bodies on the line and I’m sure they’ll be very happy with a point.

“We were very rarely in trouble; there was only a lapse in the first half when they hit the post but other than that I think we defended very well. “We just need to be more clinical at the top end. But I’m not going to be to critical of the boys. It’s another game where we are undefeated and it’s about all the negatives about today being put right for Tuesday night.”

Vanarama Premiership Previews, Fixtures Forecasts & Form

Barnet FC,  Torquay United,  FC Halifax,  Bristol Rovers,  Gateshead & Wrexham FC lead the pack with Woking FC, Kidderminster Harriers, Forest Green Rovers, Macclesfield Town and and Eastleigh FC chasing. The Pulsating People’s Premiership plays out again this Tuesday with heroes and villains putting life and limb on the line for their living.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Vanarama Conference logo.pngEven though many of the lovers and fighters of the People’s Premiership have not got their breath back from the weekend, its a full programme again on the  morrow. Barnet go to Braintree fresh from a 0-0 that put high-flying Halifax in their place. Once Christened the pub team from Essex the Iron are climbing again, perched 11th with enough Devonshire  magnetism to pull any team apart.   Not exactly brown and mild and a pass round of a capstan full strength at half time nowadays but this is a derby fixture suggesting a clash of cultures where anything can happen. Mad Dod also has a 124 goal a season man up his sleeve. That sleeve must on a par with a clowns pocket, or maybe even a magician’s one because he is storing more fire-power than Guy Fawkes on a night out in Westminster.

Vanarama Conference logo.png The Shaymen will be beating their boss drum then? Apologies showing my age a bit there. Halifax have climbed back to second by virtue of the Braintree stalemate at the weekend and will hope to stay there with a trip to Alfreton. The Reds lost 1-0 at Dover after a 1-0 home win over Nuneaton but who would fancy them to get any points against Aspin’s finely tuned machine even if the Port Vale job may be tugging at his heart strings a little.  An end to the run that was looking as lengthy as a flight south for Gulls then Yes Torquay were finally stopped by the referee twice and  the Bucks shot four times. The Gulls went down to nine men as the wheels came of at Telford. They still only lost by the odd goal in seven but Forest Green could pose some problems as the Green Army pushed Barnet all the way before going down 1-2 at home to the Bees.

Vanarama Conference logo.png Bristol Rovers could make up over half the 3500 crowd at Eastleigh tonight following an additional 300 tickets on top of the ground being granted a licence to hold more fans. With building work not yet complete Eastleigh did not want to miss out on a pay-day.  Although the teams are a 100 miles apart this is a bit of a local one with the stuttering spitfires determined to regain that early season optimism. The Dragons slayed them 3-0 on Saturday but they are a different animal on their own battle of Britain patch. A big performance and a big win for the Gas that could see them saying amen to second or third depending on results for the Gulls and the Shaymen.

Vanarama Conference logo.png The Imps must Heed the Tynesiders who will come crashing at the gates of Impdom tomorrow night. Although a win halted the slide on Saturday with that great 10-man win over Macclesfield, we face a side very much on the rise. It is as if the clubs trajectory is a mirror of each other in all honesty. The Imp in me says a backs to the wall win, the realistic feels Gateshead could be anywhere between second and fourth tomorrow.

Vanarama Conference logo.png If anyone does slip, the Dragons or Harriers could pounce. Wrexham host Kidderminster in a massive between two quality sides that look destined to be there or thereabouts.  Wrexham blew a play-off berth last week despite dominating at Chester. Buoyed by Wilkin’s intentions to stay whether Tranmere make a move or not.  They have to win as Woking will get back to winning ways against Nuneaton.

Imps V Gateshead – Preview Teams Schemes Form Heroes & Villains

Gateshead FC had Luton Town and Cambridge Utd in front of them last year and have Torquay United, FC Halifax and Barnet FC this.  Can a  terrific attacking side with some quality players and a canny manager go one better in the play-off final this season? Perhaps for  The Head are stronger and more experienced and have not given the rest of the division the head start they did last year.

Sincil Bank Salivates…………..

The challenge:

A very tough game indeed against a top four side who finished third last season and look destined to challenge again.  For those who think we should be beating sides like this, think again. Last season the Heed attracted 8,144 to their play-off game with Grimsby. They have not kept hold of too many of those floaters but crowds are up 60% this season and almost three times the season before.  This is a side on the rise, indeed we are like two ships going in the opposite direction. The Heed are ambitious with the ability to tie players to contracts and sell them on.  Mills bagged 250,000 from Posh for Maddison which should go to at least £600,000 with add-ons.

They have players than can hurt us all over the park unless we are really on our game.  Four years this fixture would not have been seen as a tough one. Now Gateshead have a budget more than double ours with a core support that is 60% of our own over the season. Good luck lads you are going to need it.

Bees will pollinate, Gulls will feed & What of The Wings, Shaymen & Heed?

Joyous tidings for Barnet FC,  Torquay United, Woking FC Halifax and Gateshead  FC then, while the rest of us look (Wrexham FC’s Sunday meet at rivals Chester FC means they must look further) forward to another joust in the People’s Premiership.  Prayer may help but let us not mix football and religion on a Friday night when all hail should go to the Ale.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Good luck and safe journeys fellow football fans, in the meantime let’s loosen up and salivate at the sport to come on the morrow.  Remember the optimists glass may always be half full but even the worst pessimist can never be disappointed.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngBarnet look set to get back to winning ways, at home to Altrincham, as long as they can keep Damian Reeves quiet. Never mind, ‘Mad Dog Martin’ missing MacDonald (just a month out it seems) has Akinde Cooke the Nurse and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all to keep the goals flowing. Omen hoever – Damian Reeves can and will score in a convent.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngTorquay, now second and perched, await down in the dumps Dover (22nd)  ‘neath the creaking trapdoor that beckons a return from whence they came. Gulls as many on the coast know have been picking at the White Cliff’s  for  years.  Are Woking choking after a slim 0-1 win at the Gulls? Only time will tell, well 90 minutes of it,  because any stage fright in front of the biggest crowd of the day at Bristol Rovers on the morrow, could well see those early season dreams turn sour.  They are not called Cards for nothing and the performance on Tuesday suggests cute croupier Hill won’t be shuffling his pack.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngHalifax down in fourth, will be bouncing back to perhaps top, if all went well. The omens are good, Telford, bottom, who lost 3-2 to Alfreton now one place above them with a four point cushion from the Vanarama Premier wooden spoon, arrive at the Shay tomorrow. That’s if the manager has not actually sacked the side as we go to print. Trouble in paradise in dear old Salop then.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngGateshead in the last play-off spot go to Welling, the Wings still unbeaten in their own nest.  You feel a slip for the Heed is coming allowing Wrexham to really celebrate if they can beat Chester in the great England V Wales derby. You could walk it if the police let you, but in true bubble style you’ll get your tickets in the car-park in true ticket tout Stan Flashman style. Lincoln lost 0-2 at Welling on Tuesday – ‘a defence, a defence, all Impdom for a defence’ cried Simmo.  The call was heard, all the way to the other side of the Pennines and, Burnley’s Anderson gets the chance to stop the rot at Aldershot tomorrow.  The Shots like the Imps are good going forward but have lost three of their last four. Sounds like a return to the five goal thrillers for the Imps  – let us hope we get the decider about 89 minutes in then.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngAlan Devonshire’s bravo Braintree go to Eastleigh, slipping after tasting the Vanarama height early doors, but now as they go one way The Iron go the other, what does Dev put in the Braintree tea? It can’t be the boot money because there’s is a budget that would starve even the mice at Cressing Road. They were 6th last year and once again you expect then to be either their or thereabouts.  But enough, we are mid-table already  and it is seriously running into prime drinking time so lets have it or them………

STMI Vanarama Conference Premier Wrap, Results, Scorers & Crowds

Beware Torquay United and Woking FC as Barnet FC are held and FC Halifax falter at Forest Green Rovers. Wrexham FC, Gateshead FC Macclesfield Town and Braintree Town win  to close in on the play-off spots. Bristol Rovers beat the Imps in another outstanding 5-goal thriller at Sincil Bank.  Grab your well earned beverage fellow footy fans its time for the People’s Premiership Sunday wrap and its spicier than fajitas with a ghost pepper and Marmite.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Vanarama Conference logo.png

Well, well, well, Telford hold Barnet FC in the allegedly bottom V top mismatch of the week.  The Bees  do not normally concede on the road until a Gray penalty just before half time, thanks to a ball to the hand of Weston broke that perfect run. Cook hit home on 69 before busy Bee Johnson weaved then stung at close range to put Barnet back in charge. Then four minutes into injury time Phenix, minus the ‘O’ had a go, rising from the AFC ashes to the joy of most of the 1492.  Wasn’t that the year Columbus sailed the ocean blue? Must be a sign – although black and blue would be more apt as Telford earned six yellow cards in the ‘lively affair’. Telford stay bottom while Barnet stay a point ahead of The Cards.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngWoking, as expected, beat Chester, true to script as Giuseppe Sole got the only goal, slotting home after Morgan’s supplied the lemon dash.  Forest Green took down Halifax. Norwood’s header broke the deadlock on 20 with Parkin calmly slotting home nine minutes later.  Gateshead clearly need that new and, seventh striker, although don’t count Danny Wright out of the reckoning, for it was his noggin that nodded home to put The Heed fourth and condemn Dartford to fourth bottom.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngTorquay continue to get great results at their rivals. Six points thus far in Lincolnshire as well as a host of scalps home and away for the Gulls.  They were home flying and two nil up at Grimsby by half-time ,thanks to a close point blank hay-maker from Richards (14) and a solo dribble and drilled low drive from Young.  Hurst had every man on deck, to turn the side so when Lewis went off injured the marooned Mariners went down to ten. Four wins on the spin for Torquay – we have been warning fellow Conference footy folk.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngMacclesfield and Wrexham keep up the pressure on the play-off pack .  Macc won at Dover  thanks to Holroyd’s rare close range strike (his first since opening day).  It was not quite a storming of the white cliffs with the hosts wasting a chalk board full of chances (13 shots to 3)before keeper Taylor spilled Deverdics drive, allowing on-hand Holrod to sweep up the pieces on 77.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngThe Dragons, under Kevin Wilkin have developed a spine to match the footballing heritage that has seen them entertain but not quite team the People’s Premiership .  Wrexham did the old 1-0 down 2-1 up routine against a determined Welling side who went ahead when Beautyman pounced after Ashton had dilly-dallied and been dispossessed by Tobi Sho-Silva, to supply some silver lining. Apologies for paraphrasing an Owls anthem there.  A naught one from Nouble reduced United to 10 and the poetic passers of the Principality made the advantage count.  That man Moult finished off a five man to sweetly sweep York’s cross home.  Clarke’s winner went like a bullet to cannon in off Fyfield for a much needed second home success of the season.

Previews: Imps & Gulls Flying – Barnet & Halifax best Heed.

Some crackers this week in the Vanarama Peoples Premier with away day specialists Barnet FC at AFC Telford,  The Imps facing Bristol Rovers and Grimsby Town hosting Torquay United… plus Forest Green Rovers V FC Halifax and last but not least with those easy ones (???) for Woking, Gateshead and Wrexham.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Vanarama Conference logo.pngThe Bees at Telford then. Tremble thee not for whipping boys Oxford City, having lost 1-8 on the Saturday beat Boston 7-2 on the Tuesday. So pigs can fly then?  MacDonald (ligaments) wont be getting on the end of the flying wingmen’s service  although Akinde and replacement Gambin (a supersub brace) are scoring for fun with the Bees yet to concede either on the road.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngFGR will get their season going with at least a point against high flying FC Halifax. The Green need to after allowing Nuneaton to creep out of the bottom four.  Like Halifax they have the players and the squad suggesting this will be a goal-fest that both teams want to win. The Shaymen have been a joy to watch this season as chessman Aspin continues to plot yet another promotion.  What a ride back from the dead it has been at the Shay.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngLincoln City fresh from the local derby 3-2 thriller five-goal fried fish bliss host, Bristol Rovers, the stuttering Conference giants off the pitch. On it however The Gasmen are now coming to grips with 3 wins a draw and one defeat at bruising Braintree on it. Thus can the increasingly Jekyll and lessening  Hyde side beat the six-foot soldiers at Sincil Bank. The Imps have seen more reds than the Kremlin but Tomlinson, Bencherif and Burrow have already plundered four.  That Imps bounced back from 3 reds and 3 defeats on the bounce to edge a five goal thriller against Grimsby on Tuesday in the all- Lincolnshire affair.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngTorquay, now in the top five and tearing the Division apart look to be the form side as they head to the fisheries to play Grimsby Town, shocked at a ‘blip’ at their Lincoln neighbours. You have to feel The Gulls will fly, as they often do, in the docks.  Gateshead enlisted yet another striker yesterday (a return to 2-3-5 anyone – well they are donning flat caps at St Andrews for the day.  The Heed play bottom four Dartford expecting all three points, as do we.  Wrexham, should move towards the play-offs despite a defeat at The Gas on Tuesday. A 1-0 away defeat, after Carrington was sent off saw on-fire Dragon Moult taken off and rested ready for this one.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngKidderminster have a tough trip to improving Braintree, Eastleigh will draw at Altrincham with Macc preparing for a Dover reaction after being stung thrice in their own backyard by the Bees.  Nuneaton could be a trip too far for the Shots manager Andy Scott and Southend will be no easy port in the storm at Southend.

With Barnet facing Dover in the live one on Wednesday FC Halifax will be hoping the manager of the month curse will not curtail the bid to go top at Macclesfield Town.  It wont be easy in a derby atmosphere although Macc lost their first game of the season at Chester (0-1) on Non-League day, whereas Aspin’s Shaymen went to Chester and humiliated them 3-0. Macc beat Eastleigh the week before and have four clean sheets under their belt, with ex-Imp Fairhurst on fire.

The Mariners manager is already playing the ‘please be strong ref ‘ card ahead of the trip to Lincoln . The Lincolnshire Derby has never been one for the faint hearted, the incredibly named yellow bellies have changed the confrontation from Christmas so the cards and cash can come early. He has a point there have been six red cards in the last six games –  a score of three all.

Woking travel to Aldershot in another derby fixture that will test that unbeaten record that has seen a climb to third. Kidderminster, in third, will not relish a trip to Southport, who are not the force they have been these last few years. Then again the Harriers wont be if the financial rumours and threat to the playing budget is true.  Surprise package Eastleigh could top fifth by tonight, with a long trip to Dartford, down in 20th and struggling.

Gateshead look ready to pounce and, at the very least leapfrog a few, with a plumb home clash with Telford, second from bottom and struggling to adjust to the sunnier climbs of the People’s Premiership.  So do Wrexham, although a tough trip to Bristol Rovers, will be a real test, for the Dragons.
