Previews: Imps & Gulls Flying – Barnet & Halifax best Heed.

Some crackers this week in the Vanarama Peoples Premier with away day specialists Barnet FC at AFC Telford,  The Imps facing Bristol Rovers and Grimsby Town hosting Torquay United… plus Forest Green Rovers V FC Halifax and last but not least with those easy ones (???) for Woking, Gateshead and Wrexham.

Thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Vanarama Conference logo.pngThe Bees at Telford then. Tremble thee not for whipping boys Oxford City, having lost 1-8 on the Saturday beat Boston 7-2 on the Tuesday. So pigs can fly then?  MacDonald (ligaments) wont be getting on the end of the flying wingmen’s service  although Akinde and replacement Gambin (a supersub brace) are scoring for fun with the Bees yet to concede either on the road.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngFGR will get their season going with at least a point against high flying FC Halifax. The Green need to after allowing Nuneaton to creep out of the bottom four.  Like Halifax they have the players and the squad suggesting this will be a goal-fest that both teams want to win. The Shaymen have been a joy to watch this season as chessman Aspin continues to plot yet another promotion.  What a ride back from the dead it has been at the Shay.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngLincoln City fresh from the local derby 3-2 thriller five-goal fried fish bliss host, Bristol Rovers, the stuttering Conference giants off the pitch. On it however The Gasmen are now coming to grips with 3 wins a draw and one defeat at bruising Braintree on it. Thus can the increasingly Jekyll and lessening  Hyde side beat the six-foot soldiers at Sincil Bank. The Imps have seen more reds than the Kremlin but Tomlinson, Bencherif and Burrow have already plundered four.  That Imps bounced back from 3 reds and 3 defeats on the bounce to edge a five goal thriller against Grimsby on Tuesday in the all- Lincolnshire affair.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngTorquay, now in the top five and tearing the Division apart look to be the form side as they head to the fisheries to play Grimsby Town, shocked at a ‘blip’ at their Lincoln neighbours. You have to feel The Gulls will fly, as they often do, in the docks.  Gateshead enlisted yet another striker yesterday (a return to 2-3-5 anyone – well they are donning flat caps at St Andrews for the day.  The Heed play bottom four Dartford expecting all three points, as do we.  Wrexham, should move towards the play-offs despite a defeat at The Gas on Tuesday. A 1-0 away defeat, after Carrington was sent off saw on-fire Dragon Moult taken off and rested ready for this one.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngKidderminster have a tough trip to improving Braintree, Eastleigh will draw at Altrincham with Macc preparing for a Dover reaction after being stung thrice in their own backyard by the Bees.  Nuneaton could be a trip too far for the Shots manager Andy Scott and Southend will be no easy port in the storm at Southend.

Preview: Lincoln V Tamworth – Sincil Bank Battle Looms

The Lambs raided Nottingham Forest, Oxford Utd, Gillingham FC, Fulham FC, Crawley Town, Birmingham City, Bury,  Barrow, AFC Telford and Accrington Stanley over the summer in an ambitious ploy this term.  The huge Peniket (released by Fulham) and Lateef Alliyu from Crawley Town will be a handful up front armed by a very quick and capable midfield quartet but the six-foot soldiers will win this you feel with Wright, Tomlinson and Fairhurst all with points to prove.

Thank you for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

For a side with what has traditionally been regarded as a bottom third budget, manager Dave Belford and his chairman have certainly pushed the boat out and will surprise a few this season, not unlike Simmo’s Imps.  Peniket and centre-midfielder Baker have hit the ground running with three goals apiece, but the side has understandably taken time to gel. The 1-0 defeat of Macc who had gone 3 without defeat suggests they are beginning to click with lightning rod Alliyu getting the winner as well as a booking.

The defence has enjoyed a complete rebuild, but in truth a tough spine runs down this team with 23 bookings and two reds on the board already.  This one will be an incident filled battle with a few goals one feels, with the Imps and the Lambs far from shrinking violets.  Peniket is huge and skilful, he will provide a very tough test for Boyce and Brown will be at full stretch to contain Alliyu. Miller and Newton (on 4 yellows now) will also have to deal with Wright and Todd, with Evans on the overlap too. The central midfield partnership has yielded 3 goals from Baker and a couple of assist from Kerry

The Summer Plans

Despite losing top scorer Cunnington, as well as Tate, to Cambridge and Marcus Kelly going to Forest Green the side is so much stronger this year.  He brings his goalkeeping son in from Bury as a playing assistant and has assembled an admirable back four on paper.  In comes Jack Evans from Gillingham,  Matt Regan from Forest, imperious Jordan Rose from Telford and Tom Eckerslie from Accrington.

Richie Baker, from Barrow, is the only addition in midfield although the trio in his preferred 4-3-3, the loss of Kelly apart, were none too shabby anyway.  Up front the improvement will take some stopping. Peniket from Fulham will plunder this division, Justin Richards certainly still has it in him and Ebanks from Birmingham is top draw.  Let us not forget existing hit-man Darren Byfield who most Conference clubs would love to have in their team.

Belford finished 19th last season,  after replacing Marcus Law who was relieved of his duties in January.   The mission was accomplished last season to halt that alarming slide, but one gets the feeling the Lambs will be well into the top half and perhaps even pushing for the play-offs this time round.

Newtons Neutron Bombs Primed

New Imps hero and former Stockport County, Chester City, Barrow FC  and AFC Telford left-back Sean Newton has stormed into enemy territory down the left flank so far this season including a match winning display against Forest Green Rovers. Our flying full-back also delivers payloads every bit as devastating as The Lancasters of bomber county did more than half a century ago.

Thank-you for reading by Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Lincoln City F.C. badge.png

Sean supplied the assists for both of Waide Fairhurst’s goal in the 2-1 win over Rovers but he has been a massive part of the team in every game this season. Newton bombs up and down the line throughout a game but  it is the accuracy of his nukes that ensure he bags half a dozen goals each season with almost treble that in assists. He even asked for an assist bonus when he negotiated his deal.

Another perhaps even more devastating Newton nuke is his hay-maker free-kicks. We saw it in action in the final minute against Boston when his 25 yarder settled the game with aplomb.  Hopefully he will get one within range today. His two assists so far this season are a just reward for his forward flair, but, it is his desire not to get beat that also inspires his team-mates. Newts looks beaten only to come back at his man and nick it at the expense of a throw, a corner, or even a canter down the flank to start a counter.

Newton epitomises the all-for-one and one-for-all spirit of  Team Lincoln with our flying fire-starter certainly stoking up the boiler as the Lincoln Loco toots its way into another station on the way to a play-off challenge.

Well played Sean I’d give you  9 out of 10 every game and you have certainly been close to adding to that Forest Green man-of-the-match award.

Who Is Sean Newton?

The Imps have signed Stockport County and former Chester City, Barrow and AFC Telford, left-back Sean Newton today. The former fans favourite will be a big hit with the Imps faithful, as he gets up and down the line like a bull through a china shop, a veritable Newton’s cradle of energy that dispenses the theory of relativity to full-backs and wingers left in his wake.

Sean has phenomenal pace and takes a great free-kick, scoring 5 times for The Hatters last season.  He does get some goals for a full-back as well, 6 last season as well as netting 12 in 109 aps for Telford before going on loan and, eventually becoming a permanent signing last summer.

Still only 24, Sean is an inspirational lad and just makes Simmo’s height criteria at 6′ 2″. Sean scored 6 goals and laid on 6 assists last season, firing off 49 shots from a left-foot cannon.  His tackling and shadowing are first rate, with just two yellow cards in his 44 appearances last term. He is infectious lad, on and off the field, who will build morale no end, to become one of the leaders we will need all over the park this season

Holdsworth’s Last 5 Imps Trials – The first By TV.

Luton Town, Mansfield Town, Wrexham FC and Stockport County follow the FGR Friday TV match. After wins against Hyde FC and Nuneaton, draws against Ebbsfleet and AFC Telford, losses against Alfreton and Tamworth; Forest Green Rovers are arguably the toughest of the seven games, that many felt would define Holdsworth’s Imps.

Thank-you for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Forest Green Rovers FC logoLuton Town F.C. badge Logo   logo  Wrexham FC.png

The Imps sit 15th, having garnered eight points from a possible 18 so far, with the next three points a tough ask and the next four games nothing short of a mountain to climb. The Chairman stated that we need to give him a chance at the anticlimactic meeting with the 8 fans representatives. Just 1486 die-hards did on Tuesday, suggesting the fans have just stopped caring, trusting little of what seems to be doing the rounds, via The Boardroom Blog, the media and the forums.

We seem to need sides to just role up at Sincil Bank and hand us three points, although divine intervention seems to have helped where it can. Yet Ebbsfleet should have been a win, as should Telford who are just two places and two points above us. We lost to Alfreton who are level on points with us, two places below us, albeit with a game in hand.  The 1-0 defeat at Tamworth, may be excusable, but an 8 point haul against these sides is not. Especially with the next 5 fixtures coming up on the horizon.

Whatever the excuses, for the missing thousands to venture a return any time soon, at between £16 and £18 pounds, the team need to win. We have certainly blown the easier chances, now comes the really tough questions.  The history with the Stags, the Wrexham and Luton challenges, plus Gannon’s County, suggest none of the above will be rolling over for us. This month is massive. To stay alive, we must not only get results but inspire against these five.  October is the key  to the future destinies of both Lincoln City and David Holdsworth. Whether Bob wants rid or not.

Is this the biggest challenge in our history, one that will pave the way on and off the field for our club? Or will, poor and uninspiring Lincoln City Football Club, be  on  our way to the unthinkable all over again.  Because Bob will not go, Lincoln City Holdings will not come cheap and David Holdsworth looks like he will outlive us all.  Remember how he stated he would never bankrupt a football club?  We may well have enough to avoid going down without any points deduction complications, but perhaps his tenure might still see that come to pass after all.  Because without enough fans, who are the lifeblood and the raison d’etre of a Football Club. The sums will simply never add up.

Who Has Most Expensive BSP Season Ticket price?

Post early bird, Luton Town, Macclesfield Town,  Cambridge United, Newport County, Grimsby Town and Lincoln City have the highest full priced BSP adult season tickets.   AFC Telford are the cheapest, followed by Kidderminster Harriers, although it has to be said that Macc are the cheapest when it comes to pay on the day terrace entrance fees.

Clearly the proximity to London will have an affect on Luton, not to mention the quality and depth of their squad.   The two Lincolnshire clubs however, are only £30 behind despite the fact that the earning capacity is amongst the lowest in the UK and,  in Lincoln’s case the playing budget is amongst the lowest in the League.   Newport Fans (4th highest) are in uproar at the price rises this season following a move to Rodney Parade that sees a rumoured 2,000 break even figure,  now that bar sales and even much of the advertising revenue,  are out of their hands.

Telford are the cheapest at £266 for seating, although nine clubs come in at £280 or under, with Hyde a fiver behind.  Fourteen clubs are £300 and over although you can get to every game at 7 of the BSP sides for £250 or less if you go for terracing or lower category seating.

The figures certainly suggest the clubs are eager to test the fans loyalty, given the recession. As to whether the gates will hold up is anyone’s guess. Form of course is the key determinant of value for money.
