Vanarama- It’s Up In The Air As Bees, Gulls, Gas and Dragons Circle The People’s Premiership Peak

Come on own up did you go to see Bristol Rovers, Barnet FC, Wrexham FC, FC Halifax, Grimsby Town, Torquay United, Woking FC or Kidderminster Harriers last night in the flesh, or was it the BIG Cup on TV, as The Guardian Fiver calls it? Mmm thought so, well, all is forgiven and a  warm welcome to The Gents (no not to toilets although few as common as me can boast a double-barrelled spanky-spanky, their name on every toilet doorway and their own aftershave that the misses reckons makes me smell old – yes I know there is a song in that)  or rather,  the venerable and veritable Vanarama or People’s Premiership wrap,  the division the big-money men forget, yet still it boasts heroes villains and old school football in the flesh, where giant killing and scalps are the modus operandi, in a nether region where full-time meets part-time and passion with not quite all the balls in the air.

But to the games fellow football folk to the peoples games……….

Vanarama Conference logo.pngWrexham beat Barnet (still buzzing & top) in the battle of the passing princes, thanks to a cool Evans finish four minutes into the second half and a great performance between the sticks for Bachmann, denying Cook and Akinde from point blank range.  Barnet had their chances but the Dragons are breathing fire and climbing after a fourth away win this season.  Wilkin’s men are one win from top spot now despite still being one place off the play-offs. Silent sixth worked for Working and the Gulls, suggesting an interesting weekend, although Wrexham must wait until Monday for the bubble derby trip to Chester.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngTorquay United edged Woking in a top of the table clash between the two form sides of the division. Woking edged the first half but few break down the Gulls who deny then fly at you on the counter with more zip than a jean factory.  Captain fantastic, Young,  earned all three points and the plaudits with a 90th minute hallelujah howitzer of a free-kick from 40-yards. If there had not been a net it would still be going now,  as The Gulls (we warned you) storm second, now just a point behind the Bees. They pick teams off on the counter and have a defence that could peel an orange in its pocket – that’s five without conceding – all victories.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngSo to Halifax, down in fourth, fresh from a fishy 1-1 with The Mariners. All went well when the mesmerising Marshall curled a cultured set-piece just four minutes in. Neilson outwitted Roberts just ten minutes later to end the scoring as both sides fluffed their lines.  A question: with Port Vale now losing six on the spin will they make a call to Aspin, who turned down the Carlisle gig.  He was a legend there, but will he want to lead Halifax back into the League after leading them back from the edge and the football wilderness? Seven strikers Gateshead – the new home of 2-3-5 North East number nines, also drop to fifth, still level on points (20) with the Shaymen after coming from behind at Macclesfield. Gnahoua thundered home from 18 yards ten minutes shy of half-time, before that man, Danny Wright, did it again, clipping a beauty into the top corner on clickety-click 66.

Vanarama Conference logo.pngKidderminster continue to put their off-field troubles behind hitting Altrincham for four. Gash 37′ Reid 40′Johnson 72′ and Styche 90′ show the firepower in the Harriers side, now eighth and looking at lift-off. Biggest crowd of the night – some jealous applause at the back then for the 4861 on a Big TV Cup Tuesday –  saw side in the rise Bristol Rovers live up to their name and step on the gas to numb Nuneaton 3-1.  It was guile, style and a smile for Parkes 2′Taylor 48′ seemed to settle it until  Dean headed a lifeline. Gosling 78′ ended any comeback notions for the inspiration player caretaker who does not want the position full-time.
