Former Imp & Leeds United No 2 Favourite for Carlisle Gig.

Neil McDonald, no 2 to Peter Jackson at Lincoln before moving to Leeds United under Gary McAllister looks the favourite to change Carlisle United’s fortunes.  Compensation has to be agreed with West Ham (discussions are on-going as we write this one)  his current employer and there is the long-standing relationship with Big Sam to consider.

Thanks for reading STMI.

It is a surprise Leeds have not moved for the West Ham assistant and almost life-long no2 of Big Sam Allardyce, given Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is the latest contender to court the Cellino favour. Neil McDonald has to take the plunge and become a manager again one day, given his coaching ability and knowledge of the game. Sam gave McDonald his first real break at Bolton, after Neil had earned his badges at Preston. He did get his UEFA pro badge their before trotting off to join Dowie at Palace. He then tried a top job for himself – this is where the Carlisle connection comes in – and perhaps a desire to finish a job he started some time ago.

He did well at Carlisle in the 2006-7 season as manager, leading the Cumbrians to 8th place, their highest league placing in two decades. Incredibly he was sacked that summer at the beginning of the next season because “The board of Carlisle United regret to say that they have lost confidence in Neil McDonald and are terminating his contract forthwith.”

McDonald then took over at Östersunds FK in Sweden saving them from relegation in a thrilling five week spell. Jacko, a good friend and former team-mate sold him the dream-team ticket with Neil as his coach and right-hand man at Lincoln. McAllister did the same and took him to Leeds and ditto Big Sam at Blackburn Rovers before the two took up the Upton Park challenge. Will the Cumbrian challenge appeal to McDonald because big Sam wont stand in his way and West Ham are prepared to talk money it seems.
