Trinity 0 Imps 0 City Savour Silverware As Blues Pay Cup Penalty.

Lincoln City defeated rivals Gainsborough Trinity on a wet and windy night at the Northolme as Trinity ultimately paid the penalty in their second cup competition in as many weeks.  Both the FA ruling and this 2-4 penalty defeat would be tough on the blues (arguably both also came at the hands and feet of the Imps given the unfortunate JT eligibility issue) who dictated the play and edged the chances.  For Lincoln, it would be the first taste of County silverware since John Schofield’s men won in 2006/7, putting the Imps and Grimsby Town on 38 wins apiece with Scunthorpe on 20 and Gainsborough 4th on 19 (see table at bottom).

To the game footy fans to the game…………

The Imps were the first to threaten on a long and heavy rain-soaked pitch, Sheridan put Fairhurst away but his long and goal-bound effort was magnificently clawed from the top corner by keeper Emery. Ex Imp Ciaron Toner clearly had a point to prove and was the life and soul of the Trinity midfield as they dominated the half and most of the game.  The Imps back four stood firm to the hosts and the elements although they lived dangerously at times. There were few chances although Young headed over at a corner and Toner cleverly skidded an effort off the turf that Preece brilliantly palmed for a corner. City’s highlight saw Fairhurst conjure for Bohan Dixon to thunder a drive inches wide.

Nick Wright looked useful, when and if he got the ball to feet, although the conditions and cohesion within the team was poor. No reserve side and the lack of match fitness would be a tough ask for a passing side in the face of a physical Trinity side determined to win the County Cup with all thoughts of a classic growing slimmer the more the pitch cut up.  That said Ex-Imps Simon Russell and Toner were trying to play football as the two exchanged to feed Williams who fizzed a long-range effort that Preece brilliantly palmed onto the bar.

The second half mirrored the Somme as a battle of attrition in the middle made for few chances. The Imps first attempt of note saw Fairhurst twist and turn but Emery, aided by the angle advantage, saved his effort comfortably.  Housham rallied the troops with Davis, Clayton and a towering header from Darren Stamp going just over and Todd Jordan clearing an effort from Davis off the line keeping the statisticians and Preece busy in the worsening rain before Jordan hit the post with a bullet with penalties looming.
