Hereford 1 Lincoln 0 Ex-Imp bites The Hand That Fed
A game of few chances would be settled by a left-back that spent 3 games on loan for us last season. But let us not get too ahead of ourselves or else the tale will be over before it is told.
For the benefit of Hereford fans visiting STMI for the first time , first the Teams & schemes then a blow by blow followed by more stats than you can shake an Imp or Bull at, thanks for reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs.

To the game fellow football fans to the game……………
Hereford kick off and after a stop start opening the overlapping Newton feeds Power who shoots straight down keeper Evans throat. Evans kicks long Brodie beats Brown in the air and flicks on to Smith, but his snap-shot clears the bar. A one-two between Miller and Tomlinson sees the latter chip to the far post but alas there is no one there. Power under-hits a back-pass but Farman beats Brodie to it and clears.
Both the Lincoln full-backs are eager to get forward again but the deliveries are mead and drink to a huge back four. Tomlinson and Nolan exchange but Nolan is pulled back for offside. A Newton free-kick is easily claimed by Evans who hoofs quickly again but Brown heads clear. The referee then gets in the way in the Lincoln box, the ball falls to Smith who shoots goalwards but Farman palms for a corner.
Boyce imperiously heads away two Chris Bush long throws before McDonald takes out Power but escapes a caution, indeed the referee has let a few cynical and late challenges go so far tonight. Tomlinson gets the first yellow for a late one on McDonald and then Bush on the overlap lets fly but Miller blocks for a corner. Nat Brown clears the first and second corner and is also involved in blocking a volley from Bush.
A terrific ball from Nolan sees Tomlinson head wide, but in truth the final ball is letting both sides down. McDonald heads to Nolan and his fierce drive cannons off the back of Graham’s head for a corner. Powers corner fails to clear the first defender Leadbitter with all the big lads waiting in the box. A frustrated Brodie, who has come deep, fires high and wide. Great work from Tomlinson sees him lay off to Jordan who delivers a great cross but Evans beats Sheridan in the air.
Both sides keep the faith and the Imps kick off. A clumsy late challenge by Nolan on Leadbitter earns him a yellow. The Bulls are shading the possession but crosses from Leadbitter, Bush and even Brodie are easily cleared by Boyce or Brown. A foul by Newton on Brown just outside the box earns a card and gives Bush an opportunity but the ball is low, woeful and easily cleared. Lincoln’s approach play is pretty, intricate and inventive without being a threat.
Brown gets a fantastic challenge in on Brodie to save the day as the Bulls continue to press. Power flicks a great ball to Tomlinson who tries a lob but Evans gets a finger tip to it to palm it over. Miller sends in a corner that Evans flaps at but the ball rolls for a throw. Brodie leaves the field for Walker and Simmo takes off Tomlinson for Wright. Brown gets beyond Newton and crosses to Walker but he thumps well over the bar.
Simmo brings on Fairhurst for Sheridan and Dixon for Newton with Jordan moving to left-back. Jordan is booked for dissent and Leadbitter curls the subsequent free- kick over the bar at one end whilst Power slices for a throw at the other. West is away and is brought down by Miller for the Imps fifth yellow card of the game. Leadbitter twists and turns but Farman gets his finger tips to it at the expense of a corner. West’s 84th minute corner causes havoc in the box and after a spell of pin-ball ex-Imp Chris Bush slams home with his left peg to give the Bulls the lead.
Pilkington replaces West as The Bulls look to wind down the clock with Green earning a yellow for a foul on Fairhurst. Increbible with a foul count of 13 to the Bulls and 15 to the Imps the card count stands at 1 for the hosts and 5 for the visitors . The board shows five minutes of injury time to give the Imps a little hope. The Imps get a corner but it is cleared, then a free-kick that Miller delivers but Bush inevitably clears. Bohan Dixon has a dig which McDonald blocks bravely and Fofana sends over a cross that James puts his laces through, to end a good defensive performance but another fruitless night..
