Grimsby Town & Lincoln City Comparison – Who Is Winning Battle For Lincolnshire Pride

Grimsby Town finished last season in 4th and reached the FA Trophy final, but a 0-4 defeat at FC Halifax, has widened the crack their title credentials and allowed Lincoln City to move three points clear in the race for Lincolnshire pride and a potential play-off place at the end of the season.

Lincoln and Grimsby go head to head on Boxing Day and New years Day, a fixture that saw the Mariners take four points last term including a demoralising 1-4 defeat in our own back yard.  However this season things look to be much closer with the Imps set to battle all the way against our big spending local rivals. For all the investment and, a thrilling midfield, Paul Hurst has played Lenell John-Lewis up front on his own, in a 4-4-1-1 leaving Hearn and Hannah on the bench, since  Rob Scott mysteriously leapt the net.  LJ-L got the winner in the 1-0 home win over Braintree that saw the Lincolnshire rivals tied for 8th, as we drew 1-1 at Barnet, but last time out the Mariners were toothless in a 0-4 trouncing at Halifax with the Imps edging Southport 1-0.

The Imps are undoubtedly punching above their weigh with a hard-working counter attacking Team Lincoln ethos. That said the Imps pass the ball well.  The defence could peel an orange in its pocket, but despite just one up front and, if the chances had fallen a little kinder in and around the box, they deserve better than 9 goals scored, a feat matched by the Mariners.  The work-rate has been fantastic, but then it needs to be with the top 8 bonus a vital part  any Lincoln player’s pay-packet. No one earns it more than Tomlinson who is doing as many miles as a box-to-box midfielder. But the quality more than matches the determination throughout the squad.

This week the Imps face a tough ask at the Hatters, whilst the Mariners go to Chester City.  Could the seesaw tilt the other way? Perhaps but with a 3 point and 4 goal advantage to the Imps two defensive minded sides will have to collapse or exceed expectations for the wrong and right reasons respectively.  At present there is a fivers breadth between the two sides, good news for the box office at Christmas. The Mariners will also be given the Home End, a  £2 discount (£16) and a larger 1956 allocation on Boxing Day. Let us hope they do not get a chance to dance on our graves this year.
