Cambridge Utd V Lincoln Teams & Schemes

A point or more at Cambridge United has to be seen as a result as Simmo’s 4-2-3-1 takes on one of the the few squads good enough to play true 4-4-2 at this level.  Foster and Nolan will have to be at their best as will Boyce  & Brown and Gray & Newton because the four midfielders and two strikers they are about to meet and greet, on a greasy surface to boot, will make for an exciting contest at the top of the Skrill Premier this afternoon.

First the schemes………..

Those best laid plans often turn to dust in the heat of battle, with a derby atmosphere hardly a help in fathoming the most imprecise of sciences. Facts fall to fiction as heroes are cheered and zeroes are jeered. This suggests hope for the Imps seeking to punch above their financial weight again in the face of another formidable foe. Walk away from this one unbeaten and even the 60 cast from their City centre homes during a fire scare yesterday, will be in the mood for frying tonight.

Cambridge are top, the Imps fourth, with just 3 goals separating the derby duellists.   The game sees a clash of cultures that could go either way, but the hosts have to be seen as the favourites with a budget more than double that of the Imps with a strength in depth the envy of the division.  Such is their strength in depth that they rested Cunnington and Hughes on Saturday allowing Arnold and Sam-Yorke to partner Donaldson instead.   Hughes looks set to partner Cunnington at the expense of  Sam-Yorke  as Money goes for brute force, pace and power, up top at least, against Boyce and Brown.

The pace and trickery will come from wide with Arnold and Donaldson (who played up top against the Shots) set to vie for the right wing slot. Dunk on the left would also grace any side suggesting a busy day for our full-backs Gray and Newton. Foster and Nolan will need to be alert against 2 on 1s with full-backs Taylor and Tait dangerous going forward.  Nolan and Foster will be key and, though helped by the advanced trio, they must deal with the spectre of Central midfielders Berry and Champion.

Power, Rowe and perhaps Dixon will also help out and press, but they will also be a menace on the counter.  This is Dixon’s game if he get’s the nod, his pace and power will be hard for United to contain. As will Power and Rowe coming from deep against a defence that is not used to this kind of adversary.  The back four has been rebuilt with Miller (a target for Simmo until the United offer blew us out of the water) and McAuley  a great central defensive pairing.  But they conceded two against Welling and will struggle to cover the runs from deep of  our advanced midfield trio.  Tommo also has them both for pace.

If the Imps can frustrate a very balanced and talented side  we can counter and hurt Cambridge. Keep things tight and disrupt their rhythm and we could certainly win this one, concede early and it could he a hard day.  That said we can get a couple against Cambridge which could set things up for a thriller and a great advert for non-league football.
