Newton Sets Up Table Topping Cambridge Utd Derby Encounter
Former Stockport County, Chester City, Barrow FC and AFC Telford left-back Sean Newton is looking like the capture of the summer for Lincoln City manager Gary Simpson. Cambridge Utd scouts will have plenty to say about his match winning display against Forest Green Rovers.

Sean supplied the assists for both of Waide Fairhurst’s goal in the 2-1 win over Rovers and could not have escaped the onlooking scouts from Cambridge United yesterday. Scouting is par for the course with manager Gary Simpson also taking a personal look at next weeks opposition last Wednesday, witnessing a 2-2 draw against Welling.
Newton bombed up and down the line throughout the game but his two most telling contributions came at vital times. Having gone 1-0 to a cross-cum-shot from Barry, on 19 minutes, his great run and cross put in Fairhurst who beat Stokes to slam home with his left foot. The goal machine was up and running 25 minutes into his Sincil Bank bow, but a Newton nuke had carved our way back into the game.
Then with 5 minutes on the clock Newton robs wide-boy Norwood, in typical team Lincoln fashion, to tenaciously move forward before playing to Fairhurst. Waide crashes an awesome strike into the top corner to complete his brace and a well deserved win for The Imps who move fourth.
Newton has epitomised the Lincoln spirit in his first three games for the club in the Skrill Premier. His two assists are a just reward for his forward flair but it is his desire not to get beat that also inspires his team-mates. Two or three times he looked beaten only to come back at his man and nick it at the expense of a throw.
Well played Sean – 9 out of 10 (same as Waide) but your all-round contribution edges this weeks man-of-the-match reward.
