STMI Skrill Premier Guide Gateshead FC Scream Goals

The arrival of Oxford Utd’s Luke O’Brien, Scunthorpe Utd’s Josh Walker and strikers  Brodie (Crawley T / York C), Larkin (Lincoln/ Hartlepool Utd)  and 18 goal Barrow bow Boyes has certainly turned a few heads at the Heed’s chances.  Anth Smith is a young and unproven manager, with very good taste and a great love for the game, but will it be hatch, match or despatch at Gateshead this season?

On the face of it the board have shown Anth Smith, just 41 and a former Sunderland full back, an awful lot of backing considering he has earned just a one year deal after taking over from Ian Bogie.  But the canny lad had a 40% win percentage at Chester-le-Street and knows the non-league scene well after retiring through injury at just 24.  Anth came in and guided The Heed  to 17th last year despite the club having no permanent home ground ahead of the new stadium.  His contacts at Sunderland and Hartlepool will be interesting should a very talented squad not blend.

With Liam Hatch at no 9 the arrival of Brodie, Boyes and the creative Larkin suggests plenty of goals this season as long as the midfield can supply the bullets.  The signing of winger Marwood suggests they can, with Josh Walker also added to a midfield that  contains Cummins, Turnbull and Chandler.   The defence will be boosted by O’Brien from Oxford, Tate from Darlington, Baxter from Bedlington and full-back Dan Smith from the managers Black Cat and Chester-Le-Street days.

The Conference could well be as close as the Championship was last season with perhaps as little as half a dozen points between the play-offs and relegation.  If Smith can blend a side of outstanding  individuals into an unselfish team the Heed could be the surprise package this season.
