Leeds & Vale Ace Aspin & The FC Halifax Rise

Former Leeds Utd & Port Vale stalwart Neil Aspin  keeps on winning and his Rochdale, Luton Town, Lincoln City and Kidderminster Harriers raids look set to continue the pattern for FC Halifax, a club reborn and on the rise. Since Aspin (244 / 6 Leeds Aps/gls & 410 / 3 for Vale) arrived in 2009/10 he has taken the club from obscurity to the Conference and the verge of the Football League. He won the NPL Div 1N in his first season then the NPL on 2010/11.  Only Gainsborough stopped them in the BSN play-offs in 2011/12, but last season The Shaymen went up via the play-offs. Few should bet against a manager who might grudgingly see consolidation as acceptable this year but not for long.

Manager Neil Aspin has just been given a new two year deal and deservedly so, but consolidation and sentimentality are not his fortes.  The Shaymen now have Keith Briggs (born leader from Kidderminster) and John Worthington as midfield generals, with perhaps his one gamble, the brilliant but inconsistent ex-Imp Adam Smith on the wing. Aspin has also hedged his bets with a few unpolished but competitive midfield gems in Wilson and Holsgrove from Guiseley and trialist Hibbs.

The defensive refit sees Ainge from Luton and Pearson from Rochdale (former Blackburn & Lincoln defender – yes if you blinked you missed), a fabulous pairing it has to be said.  Roberts has also arrived from Buxton along with Maynard, a bit lightweight, but one of the fastest overlapping full-backs in the division this year. Will Halifax miss Jarrett and Seddon, who have defected to Chester? Probably not, because if the side gels, it could be mission accomplished, albeit via the play-offs this season.
