Tomlinson Aims For Goal Run

Ben Tomlinson is determined to score against Scunthorpe Utd tonight and thus turn his debut strike against Middlesbrough FC into a scoring run.  Goals breed confidence for a striker as well as the team, but there is more at stake than this tonight. Indeed when it comes to goal pedigree, Rowe, Wright and Yussuf already have 3 goals chalked up.

Clearly County pride comes into this one, with Simmo the first manager to take the County Cup seriously for some time.  That has been such a shame given the desire for a Lincoln side to win the Lincolnshire County cup was the raison d’etre for the forming of Lincoln City, the the Cits or Citizens in the first place. Councillor Bainbridge, William Mortimer and 22 others turned out at the Monson Arms hotel in 1884 with such a vision as two clubs were merged and the goal achieved in 1886-87 to finally topple the Sleaford dominance in the county

Yet the real elephant in the room, other than the ruse that The Iron will play a weakened team, is somewhat closer to home, not to mention the financial bone. Lincoln City have to start winning home games if the club is to get the crowds back and challenge sufficiently to continue to reverse what has become an alarming trend. Peter Jackson cited an inability to win enough games at home as the major reason for his premature departure.  With under 500 at the previous two home games, despite 1200 season ticket holders, let us hope the £6 / £3 entry fee will tempt a few more in.

The added bonus of a win will then hopefully tempt a few more to turn out for the Boston game and community day this Saturday. The win may not be so likely of course, but the manner of the performance can still do much to add to a healthy optimism around Sincil Bank.  Scunthorpe will be a huge test, we are the underdogs, but the passion and style of play deserves a far greater audience after Saturday’s great display.

Fortunately most of the defence looks set to return and Tomlinson, Rowe, Wright, young Yussuf and midfield general Nolan are aiming to plunder goals. If Tomlinson gets on a goal run there will be no stopping him as 29 at Worksop and 6 in 10 before a leg break at Macc shows.  He then got 14 last term for Alfreton as a support striker, suggesting we have a goal machine at Sincil Bank. In reality we have more with, Fairhurst, for one, yet to find his fitness and feet, but very much a goal machine in his Doncaster days.  Then there is Rowe and Wright who have bagged hat-tricks and dark horse Yussuf also three gaols to the good and certainly rediscovering his own knack for finding the net. Nob bad really for a side still blending, in a pre-season hampered by injuries to key personnel.

So the chance for the full squad to pit themselves against the County’s best equipped side, will be seen as a welcome test.  Surely that, curiosity and County pride will break the four figure mark tonight?
