Ben Tomlinson was chased by Bradford City, Sheffield United and Rotherham Utd before Simmo nipped in and signed him for Macclesfield Town for an undisclosed fee and Alfreton Town did the same last term. He is a younger and perhaps even better version of Ashley Grimes, now at Bury FC, with that same, tenacity, goal touch and a card collection that will ensure regular fireworks at Sincil Bank. The Imps have had to up their bid to Afreton but Simmo has got his man at last to land Ben on a two year deal.
Simmo actually got Macc to fork out a fee for the little goal machine, who had notched 29 goals in the previous season for Worksop. With scouts from the Blades, Millers, Bantams and even Forest filing their final reports and trials in the offing Simmo charmed him just in time with first team football paramount. Ben, just a babe, had also got 17 in the previous two seasons as a youthful understudy who was still breaking records in the youth side. Simmo is Tomlinson’s kind of manager and he responded well netting two in the last 5 minutes as a sub at Hereford, before getting one of the fastest goals in Football League history (6.4 seconds against Morecambe). Ben got 6 in just 10 starts under Simmo at Macc, before breaking his foot to end an awesome start. Last term he got 14 in 31 starts for Alfreton, acting as support striker to Clayton with Nathan Arnold supplying the bullets (HERE). He is a battler with 10 yellows and a red last term, however the official accreditation of 2 assists undervalues his all-round contribution to the team.
