31 David Preece (GK)
With ex-Scunthorpe Utd & Imps keeper Jake Turner now at Grimsby Town David Preece is determined to use all of his experiences at Aberdeen FC, Barnsley, Sunderland FC and Darlington to coach Farman and our young goalkeepers to bring out the best of their ability. Jake Turner is now on the verge of a deal at Grimsby, after going nowhere at Lincoln, it is easy to see how great natural talent can still let opportunities slip through their gloves.

David has now been back around a fortnight, after an agreed summer sabbatical at Kevlavic, in Iceland, a country he sees as a home from home. Upon his return he has been keen to work on technique as well as passing on the invaluable empirical knowledge and experience he has amassed to ensure the young keepers can avoid the pitfalls that can end your chances so quickly. Paul Farman is also looking sharper than ever under his studious and varied coaching regime.
This is typical of a keeper who spent three seasons biding his time at Barnsley. His philosophy is to always be ready, opportunities to impress can come at any-time just like a tactical change in an otherwise quiet game between the sticks. Nothing illustrates this more than his 6 years at Aberdeen where he made 107 appearances in all competitions, competing with Peter Kjaer and Ryan Essen. David then started his Nordic footballing love affair in Denmark with Silkeborg IF, before crack OB Odense came in. After more bench time he returned to England earning a 1 year deal at Barnsley. The tykes gave him another two-year deal but he made just 8 appearances.
At 36 he still has plenty to offer on the pitch but he is invaluable off it, handy to have if you are juggling a tight budget that requires a coach and playing keeper combined. He made 8 appearances last season, there when we needed him, a sure-footed understudy that will not let us down. We are lucky to have him for another year.
With him around the chances are we will not allow another Jake Turner to slip through the net. Jake got a deal last term as Nick Draper was farmed to Sheffield FC – HERE – but never got a look in. And he is a talent, so much in the Mazza mould if you get the chance to see him play. Not the tallest but he has everything else and some.
