Grimes Set For A New L2 Gig then

Ashley Grimes (ex Millwall FC and Lincoln City) looks set to pillage League 2 defences again after agreeing a deal with Bury FC, after snubbing Cheltenham Town. The Championship was a little too high for him but Goal machine Grimes chimes,  regular as clockwork in League 2 and will be the perfect replacement for Andy Bishop who will finally link up with Morrell at Wrexham.

Ashley banged in 17 goals in 30 appearances for the Imps in our relegation season should do well at relegated Bury, for whom he signed last week. Grimes got double figures in both his seasons at Rochdale in League 1 and  2 finishing with 21 goals from 70 games.  You can bet he will be looking forward to the new Gigg after two seasons of struggle at Dale. Following relegation to League 2 they finished a lowly 19th last term. Let us hope the same does not happen at Bury who now appear clear of their financial woes following their own relegation last year.

Its a shame we could not have him back, he looks good for a hat-full in League 2 this year and would probably bag 30 in the Conference. He was  awesome at Lincoln take a look at this beauty, in the middle of that hot streak of six wins in seven that suggested we could beat the drop  in 2010/11 – HERE.

Tilson had brought him in on a months loan at the end of October 2010 to try and stop the rot. He did not score in his opening three games but then clicked with a goal at Morecambe and Hereford. Tilson thankfully managed to bring him back in January and he found the Midas touch.  He scored in the 1-2 defeat to Bradford on New Years Day then got another in the 3-4 ding dong defeat in the Cup against Hereford. Next came a glorious hat-trick against Stockport in a vital 4-3 away win and a priceless poach in a 1-0 win over Port Vale.

Mind you the card count was climbing too, with the somewhat petulant striker serving  two bans (a single and a double as he reached 11 yellows for the season. But fans can forgive a goal machine that – just look at Ian Wright’s record at Arsenal.  Ashley would not 8 goals from his next 11 games including braces against Morecambe and Southend.  His final goal would come against Stevenage in March as that terrible run set in motion our relegation. Another yellow against Gillingham, his 10th of the season, didn’t help as he faced a two match ban.
