Clayton Snubs Imps & United
With Alfreton cutting back and going part-time from next season it was of some surprise to see them offer hot-shot Paul Clayton a new improved deal, heading off interest from Lincoln City, Cambridge United and 3 other unnamed BSP clubs. Ben Tomlinson, another of Simmo’s ex-players, is also attracting attention, but as he is under 24 and contracted until 2014, so he will command a fee.
Clayton scored 19 goals last season and Tomlinson scored 14, to forge a prolific partnership that poses problems for every BSP club. Cambridge United need a new goal machine after Michael Gash (joint BSP top scorer) made his loan to Kidderminster into a permanent 2-year deal, over the weekend. The U’s have transfer listed Johnathan Hedges and Scott Garner and released Craig Ross, Joe Anderson, Charlie Wassmer, Curtis Haynes-Brown, Rossi Jarvis and Billy Gibson.
Simmo, meanwhile is currently looking for three strikers and waiting on Vadaine Oliver to put pen to paper. Let us hope the lad’s head is not turned, as both parties would benefit from a season together before the undoubted talent moves on. Word on the grapevine is that the Imps would be looking for a big fee from the lad – figures ranging from £50-£100k – to boost the budget.
