Will Arsenal, Southend Or Barnet want Nicolau Back Then?

Ex- Arsenal, Southend and Barnet star Nicky Nicolau is continuing to grow after masterminding the Wrexham win in usual softly, softly  but devastatingly beautiful fashion.  The young Gun won the FA Youth Cup in 2001 and was given a 3 year deal at the Gunners but failed to make the grade. Southend pounced but the Championship/ L1 also seemed a step too far.   Barnet however gave him a run in the side where he appeared 95 times in league & Cup before dropping into non-league with Woking (in BSP next season). STMI have continued to purr over his technique in a League where it is hard to shine and earn the right to play quality football.

Thank you for Reading Neil Gentleman-Hobbs

Even after that curling thirty-five yarder against Grimsby in the Lincs Cup, he had to bide his time with bit-part sub performances averaging under 10 minutes in our opening 4 games.  His first goal against Ebbsfleet was followed by another against Alfreton in the following game.  Next up Telford, saw an assist. He bettered that two games later with both an assist and a goal against Nuneaton.  Now central to our free-kicks and corners his long range passing and shooting seem to be growing in confidence. No wonder, from 12 shots he has scored 4, with another 5 on target.

Nicky set up Both Taylor and Larkin’s goals yesterday as well as pouncing to crisply net the opener. His 35 yard cross-field pass to Larkin was certainly one for the purists, but the vision to his threaded ball for Taylor was just as productive, if not eye catching. The curler that crashed against the woodwork would just have doubled the icing on the cake as our emerging star continues to let his technique do the talking.

Nicky was brought in predominantly as back-up in a defensive role. He can play either as a full-back or as a wide midfielder. In a three, backed up by a defensive midfielder like Gray, he can get even better you feel. His set-piece delivery is more than adequate at this level.  It was interesting to note that Gray’s lack of true pace was not exposed once yesterday, with Bore finally played in his natural position. Bore has the pace and the ability and causes much more offensive havoc on the overlap.  Nicky has grown as the season has unfolded as the stats below will back-up.

That nine of out of ten, has been coming for a while. That it comes thanks to a formation change and, against the second placed sides, suggest the 3-man managerial team are doing their homework. Grant Brown was at Stockport on Wednesday preparing for a game two weeks hence.  The change to 4-2-3-1 to combat an expected 4-2-1-2-1, showed we did not need height to humble the Dragons and comprehensively at that.

Perhaps it is not only  Nicky that needs to take a bow after this one?
