Millers Deal Helps Simmo’s Parkgate Hit Top Spot.

Little Parkgate are top of the world thanks Rotherham United giving entrepreneur and club owner Doug Shelley and former Macclesfield Manager Gary Simpson just the kick start they needed to leapfrog, back from the dead Scarborough Athletic and Worksop Parramore, to go top of the Baris North East Counties Premier League. A 4-0 win at Pickering and defeat for Worksop means the Steelmen go top with a game in hand. Nathan Forbes-Swindells , the divisions top scorer, gave them them the lead, before Keir Hannity, Todd Jordan and Brian Cusworth rounded off the rout.

The Millers signed a five figure training ground deal with Rotherham based Parkgate FC for this season.  The deal is set to run for a year or two until their own new facility is ready at the former Outokumpu site at Brinsworth. Entrepreneur, owner and Manager Douglas Shelly is bankrolling the club and enlisted the services of Gary Simpson, who has been keen to help his mate out. It is nice to see The Millers spreading the wealth locally and feeding the grass roots of the game. Putting something back is something Simmo is big on.

“It’s always been about putting what you can into the game for me,” said Gary, “but all the real credit should go to Dougie and a great bunch of lads who are a credit to the game.  The boys have a belief and a hunger as you could see tonight. No disrespect to Pickering they are an honest bunch of lads, but our lads were well worth our four and showed a hunger for more.  Everybody, Doug included as put a shift and a half in – well they’ve had to cause they have all got their jobs in the morning.”

Gary feels that entrepreneurs like Doug are the lifeblood of the grass roots game  and essential if young lads are to be kept on the straight and narrow and given an opportunity to get spotted in the game.  They have to put in first before the bonuses and trappings that the players at the pinnacle of the game enjoy.

“The lads bonus tonight will be a share of a plate of sandwiches and a drive home in the knowledge that they are top of the table and basking in the winning habit. They are the heroes here and if you are not busy this Saturday,  pop down because we have the biggie at home against rivals and money club Staveley Miners Welfare. We are averaging 85 with a top gate of 102 so everybody is welcome for a fiver”

So the big question is will Simmo need to help with the sandwiches?
