Imps Sign Striker – Who is Colin Larkin?

The Imps have signed former Hartlepool United, you’ve guessed it Mansfield Town, Chesterfield FC, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Northampton Town striker Colin Larkin.  The free agent will take the no 34 jersey, penning a deal until May 2013.

The no-nonsenge Monkey-Hanger  – not goal hanger –  bagged  26 goals in 66 Stags starts, after being signed for £125,000 from Wolves. Colin had also enjoyed a successful season long loan spell at Kidderminster Harriers where he notched 7 in 35 games, as a babe in boots, to show he could punch above his weight against bigger and more experienced adversaries.

He has a knack of scoring on his debut which stretches back to his bow for Wolves in the League Cup, where he came from the bench as a starry eyed 17 year-old youth trainee.   The Stags released him on a free in June 2005 so that he could join up with League 1 Chesterfield.  He plied his trade at the crooked church club for two seasons bagging a not too unlucky 13 from 88 appearances in all competitions.

League 1 Northampton nabbed him on a free in June 2007, offering him another two year deal, where he scored 5 goals from 61 appearances.  The free agent has spent the last three seasons at League 1 Hartlepool aka the Monkey-hangers (they hung a monkey in the town square as a French spy during the Napoleonic war and have Angus the Monkey as a mascot) but was released after getting just 4 goals in 54 appearances.

League 1 was a step too far for Colin, but the Blue Square will be a happy hunting ground for an Irish terrier, who has technique and tenacity by the bucket-full. At just 5′ 9″ he will not win a lot in the air, but then Bank Beast McCammon will; allowing him to pillage and plunder the penalty box.

Welcome aboard Colin, 30 and in his prime many would argue.  This looks another terrific signing by Holdsworth on paper – this lad is coming here to score goals, so watch out Jamie Taylor.  Or does Reg know something we don’t ?

  1. I like Colin Larkin. when he played for Stags., he put the ball in the net at Cardiff – we were playing Huddersfield for a place in Div 1 but it didnt count and we lost. I had backed hiim £20 at 14-1 to score. As we left the ground it started to pour with rain. What a wonderful day out.
