England V Sweden, The Teams, Schemes & Dreams

England are beset by unfair Euroscepticism – cruel calculated criticism of our lack of technical ability – as our nation  faces up to Sweden tonight.   Yet virtue is in the eye of few beholders  as work ethic seeks to shrug of cynicism and get the Euro campaign really rolling in the Olympic stadium this very evening. Post Jubilee and pre our own Olympics festivities, the nation as ever expects.  Gerrard, for once sharing the burden of Atlas with Parker, will hope that the javelin throwing of Young and Milner turn to shots and golden goals for Welbeck and Carroll.

Roy’s artisans should not be typecast by a few possession stats and a bland yet heartening hard-working performance against the French where heroes went unheard.  It was a clever tactical effort and as a Lescott header emphatically proved it takes just seconds to get a goal. This evenings direct approach could yet see the very peak of the football pyramid emulate and personify the pride, power and passion that has never left the grass-roots of our national game. Let us play to our strengths in the face of the Carlos Kickaballs as Lord Sugar once referred, that so beautifully hog the ball.

Time for The Three Lions to roar, as direct football earns the right to put sterile passing in its place on the Euro 2012 centre-stage.  As fans in League 2 and the BSP know only too well,  if you mix it up and show passion is the fashion, there are plenty of big scalps around for the taking.  First Sweden, then Ukraine. One game at a time, feet on the ground,  let us believe, let us share national pride in our side and enjoy the ride.

England’s ability to exploit Sweden’s aerial weakness – 6 out of their last 7 conceded have come from headers  –   sees Carroll push Young wide as the Three Lions shape up in a conventional 4-4-2 formation.  Milner will stay on the right as Oxlade-Chamberlain drops to the bench.

The Swedes are set to make three changes, though the threat posed by Ibrahimovic, now in a slightly deeper role remains.  He will have Elmander ahead of him this evening as Rosenberg makes way.  The midfield and defence also see personnel as well as additional positional shuffles. Ola Toivonen makes way  for central midfielder and previous orchestrator Elm now moved onto the left.  Gerrard and Parker will instead contest central matters with incoming veteran Svensson, who partners Kallstrom.  Our hardworking midfield two will come into their own tonight you feel as England go down the flanks and through the middle for a far more direct and match-winning game plan.

Carroll and Welbeck should have the measure of new central defensive pairing Olsson J and Mellberg. Ollson pushes  Granqvist to right-back as Lustig, given a right-run-around against Ukraine,  has a rest on the bench.  Granqvist will not have a particularly pleasant time when he faces Young, now on the left,  in all his pomp and splendour.  This is Caroll’s reputation-maker if he gets the ball in the air from the wings, something the hard-working Milner or overlapping Johnson can also provide.  What many have overlooked is the prowess of our two full-backs, very much on their best defensive behaviour against the French.  Just as well if Riberi had murdered someone in front of the referee on Monday he would still have got off scot free.

That leads us on to the referee, for as ever this vital England clash requires a sub-plot.  The very much central potential villain of the peace is referee, Damir Schomina, was much chastised for his abilities during the Champions League clash between Arsenal and AC Milan. Could he yet inflict free-kicks left, right and centre?

No we have had enough excuses and what might have beens as England fans. Though we may not win the tournament outright, the Lions shall roar two or three times yet, starting tonight.   So throw off the worries and the strife because England – our England are ours for life!

Spireites, Orient, Morecambe, York City, Barrow & Alfreton View Rich Silkmen Pickings

The hot news from Macc Town suggests that Arnaud Mendy could sign for Leyton Orient,  Sam Wedgbury for Morecambe FC, veteran Paul Morgan for Barrow and Ben Tomlinson for Alfreton.  Even Nat Brown with a year left on his contract and recently interesting Chesterfield and York City,  is now available on a free transfer.

Upon his arrival new manager Steve King, having released 16, suggested that he expected most of the  Macclesfield squad to leave.   The new man is keen to get his own men in, buoyed by over £1.2million in transfer fees thanks largelyto Peterborough and Ipswich amongst others as 7 were sold.  Ryan Jackson comes in from AFC Wimbledon, Keeper Lance Cronin has arrived from Bristol Rovers and winger Peter Winn comes in from Stevenage.

Midfielder Arnaud Mendy is interesting Russell Slade who is mindful of the new 65% wage cap rules as he seeks two further signings.  The 22 year-old French born Bissau-Guinean certainly has the ability and physique to excel in League 1.  Sam Wedgbury could be Morecambe boss Jim Bentley’s third signing of the summer although Fleetwood might also have a say.

Paul Morgan may have another season in him after all with Barrow in talks. Could Morgs also be using this as a way into  football physio? He already has a degree in physiotherapy from the University of Salford.    Striker Ben Tomlinson could well be lining up for Alfreton next season after talks with Reds manager Nicky Law.  The Derbyshire based club  would be within easy reach for the a nippy lad who scored after 6.4 seconds for Macc against Morecambe last September.

Nat Brown appears to be interesting a few clubs along with Colin Daniels and  Ross Draper. Chesterfield have had an interest in Brown for a few weeks and may make a move now he is available on a free. Then again recently promoted York may be able to enlist the services of Scott Kerr in persuading his ex-Imp mate to join the Minstermen as they make a triumphant return to the Football League.

Nat Brown Made Free Agent

Nat Brown has been told he can now leave on a free transfer despite having a year left on his contract.  Question is will this alert The Spireites after their interest  cooled or could he end up joining someone nearer home.   Mansfield or  York  may also step in  for the popular ex-Imp, who was a hero at either end for the Silkmen.

At 30, Nat Brown still has plenty to offer and is certainly good enough for League 1 or League 2 as ex-Imp Scott Kerr at newly promoted York would attest. He  is the sort of brave talismanic  figure a side needs and his presence in either box has seen him pop up at vital moments with heroic results.  Brown  was an unsung hero at the Imps  and always gave it his all after joining us from Huddersfield.

He enjoyed play-off success with the Terriers in 2003/04  and did well at the Imps under KA, who resigned him at Macclesfield. A wrist injury saw him drop down   Schofield’s pecking order  before Jacko agreed a by mutual consent deal that allowed him to move to Wrexham in June 2008.  He was the life and soul at Macclesfield under Keith Alexander and then Simmo.

If the raffle went well or Gowling were to leave Nat would be someone we could really use next season. His spirit alone keeps a dressing room bubbling and his wage demands would not be huge.

Imps Striker signs for Newport.

Jefferson Louis has signed a one year deal for Newport County quashing any lingering doubts that he might appear for the Imps again next season.

Jefferson was released along with 13 others by the Imps on May 5th after bagging 6 goals in 14 appearances.  His unique style and vital goals won him plenty of admirers after arriving from Brackley, where he banged in 13 goals in 8 starts.

We would like to wish Jefferson well, except of course when he is lining up against us next season.

STMI Q & A – Paul Musselwhite

Paul Musselwhite is a cult hero with Scunthorpe United,  Hull City and Port Vale after a League career spanning 619 games.  He then went on to make 57 appearances at Gateshead as they gained promotion from the Northern Premier and Conference North in successive seasons.  A 619th League appearance as a sub against Southend would be our former player-coach’s  only game for the Imps. Now 43 he is on the verge of a return to the League with York City.

Scunthorpe United FC logo.svg Port Vale F.C. logo    Hull City badge

Paul spent the 2-1 play-off win over Luton, on the bench, but he has tasted 6 promotions and a Football League Trophy win in 1992/92 with Port Vale.  Vale  were then Second Division runners up in 1993/94 as Paul amassed 367 appearances in all competitions before moving to Hull in 2000.   In 2004 he saw silverware again with a Third Division Runners up medal.  A return to Scunthorpe United in 2004 saw him notch a League 2 runners up medal in his first season.

Gateshead FC Logo    York City's emblem

After 2 years and 82 games Paul, then 37 dropped into the non-league with Eastleigh. Unable to sell his house in Scunthorpe,  Martin Foyle signed him as cover for Vale before Harrogate came in for him.  Ambitious Gateshead then offered him a deal in January 2008. In 18 months he tasted successive play-off success with a  Northern Premier League Premier victory in 2007–08 and the Conference North in 2008/09. This May saw the potential for a return to league action, thanks to York’s 2-1 play-off win over York City.

Paul was a cult hero among Imps, as much for his affable nature as his work behind the scenes coaching Joe Anyon.  The  song we all wish for a team of Musselwhites, based on the Freddy Flintoff ditty,  shows how much he was admired. He would always chat to fans and lift the spirits during a time that saw Jackson and Sutton leave in successive Octobers.   Paul stepped in as assistant manager with Scott Lindsay prior to the Tilson appointment and made his debut at 41 when Anyon was injured away at  Southend.

Lincoln-Wide-Pride – Football League Birthright Needs All Business’ Great & Small

League Football is Lincoln City and her proud citizens’s birthright. But we are going to have to earn it again – together as a City a United Impdom so to speak.  There are plenty that will be arguing with that boast when the BSP kicks off in August, yet no one has made it back into the league more times than us – 4 and counting. Forget the article in the paper saying the squad is complete – lets give Holdsworth the funds to boost our side and Pimp next season’s ride! Come on Imps get a running total published at least weekly –  get the City behind this. Stockport are at over £150,000 and rising and the Ebbsfleet player fund already stands at £26,000 – here

We owe it to those that have struggled for the Cits (Citizens) aka our Mighty Imps ever since Robert Dawber gave us a field to play on and George Hallam had Impdom on its feet with a hat-trick in our first ever game.  Hats in the air and all sorts by all counts.  That inspired Councillor Bainbridge and Henry Strawson  to get the business community to provide  ’two hours of healthy recreation’ for the foundry workers.  Lincoln City aka The Mighty Imps were one of the original members of the old second Division and we punched above our weight with the top 36 clubs in the country.  Come on  let’s get some Lincoln-wide-pride in our side.

Image Thanks to historical kits – here

This next season will be a pivotal one.  We either start a resurrection or turn out the lights and follow the thousands that have lost the faith following years of scandalous under investment in a 128 year-old local institution.  Its not so much the play-offs or bust but the restoration of local pride is a must.

So how can we the sons and daughters of Impdom help?  Well a prayer ahead of the 3-4 up and 3-4 down vote at the Football League meeting in Portugal would help no end. As would a lottery win to help Bob Dorrian out. For all his sins he is the only one of a shameful board who is doing  what a football club director should do by continuing to put in the cash to keep us going. But the Imps need the City to pitch in just as they have in the past.

Now times are hard for individuals, but together we can give this City a team to be proud of. Built and backed by the businesses and fans – a community backed fifth rise of the Imps can and will happen.  Get your company to follow Jackson Building Centre’s, Bookers and Brown & Starkeys  lead in backing what is becoming a reawakening of Lincoln-wide-pride for our beloved Imps.  Urge your company to buy a ticket. Print off THIS  in A4 or even better A3 and get it on the wall. And don’t forget at least one or maybe a pile of these too .

Although fans and fans groups have been keen to pitch in the real bulk of the money will only come from the business community engaging with this  initiative. If the groundswell of county-wide pride can excite this sector then £50,000 will be the tip of the iceberg. Some may even enjoy the ride. In embracing the Raffle (Your Business can enter HERE) Jacksons and Bookers Wholesale are inviting their clients to participate.  This form of viral marketing is priceless and will hopefully spur other companies to do the same with their client bases. This will not only see the target exceeded but put the Imps back into the hearts and minds of its citizens.  Go on have a heart pledge £50 to rebuild the pride inside together we can take this county wide.
